As most of our readers probably know, the cast for Zack Snyder's highly-anticiated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a stuffed ensemble that features a who's who of A-list talent. Whether it's rising stars like Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot or more established actors like Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, and Jesse Eisenberg, there will be several well-known thespians vying for screen time in the superhero crossover event.
With Snyder recently wrapping up production on the film, it would seem that new casting news regarding Dawn of Justice would be nonexistent. However, that's not the case, as new rumors are circulating that Michael Shannon (who played General Zod in Man of Steel) will be showing up in Batman v Superman as well.
The report comes courtesy of Comic Book, who claim that they have heard Shannon could have a role. For obvious reasons, it is difficult to see how Shannon could be part of the proceedings, but there are little bits of evidence that suggest the actor could be coming back. Chief among them is this picture from Instagram user billydec, which shows Shannon hanging out with Cavill near the Batman v Superman Chicago set in November 2014:
Now, it's very possible that this meeting is nothing more than a strange coincidence, and Shannon just happened to be visiting the Windy City during principal photography on Snyder's film and bumped into his former co-star. This is the first time word of Shannon's potential involvement has come about, and his return to the franchise probably would have been made public well before now. However, let's say that there's something more here and Shannon was in fact there to film a part. How could he be incorporated?
In the never-ending whirlwind of rumors about Batman v Superman, the one character name that has frequently popped up is Doomsday, a Superman villain best known for his role in the famous "Death of Superman" comic book storyline. One of the prevailing theories is that Lex Luthor will look to unleash a physical force in an effort to stop Kal-El, and since Doomsday is one of the few who can pose a threat to Superman in a fight, his inclusion would be a logical one.
In their write-up, Comic Book indicates that Shannon's Zod could be used to introduce Doomsday. According to their sources, Luthor acquires Zod's corpse and runs experiments on it, which "triggers the Doomsday genome" and causes the lifeless body to reanimate as Doomsday. This plays in line with the earlier reports that LexCorp would be holding Zod's body for research purposes, so it's certainly in the realm of possibility that this happens.
And even if Zod leads to Doomsday, that doesn't mean the latter will have the physical appearance of the former. From the sound of it, Snyder would be adapting the All-Star Superman version of Doomsday, which involves using a sentient host and genetic manipulation. In this case, Zod would be that host, but Doomsday would have a different form. If it was determined that Shannon was needed to bring life to the character, he could have shot his scenes in an isolated location far from the watchful eyes of observers.
While this new rumor certainly presents some intriguing possibilities for Batman v Superman, it is important to take it with a grain of salt until we see or hear something official regarding the film's plot. We're allegedly getting the first teaser trailer within the next few weeks, so perhaps that will provide some clues as to how this all comes together and separates fact from fiction.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters March 25, 2016.
