Warning: spoilers for Batman/Superman: World's Finest #4 are ahead.

In DC ComicsGreen Lantern may be one of the most trusted members of the Justice League, but that hasn't stopped him from fighting Batman on several occasions as of late. While Hal Jordan's most memorable "evil" Green Lantern form was as the villain Parallax, he has made two recent appearances that make the case for why he never needed Parallax in the first place to fight Batman.

Hal Jordan has appeared in the DC vs Vampires series by James Tynion IV, Matthew Rosenberg, and Otto Schmidt as the vampire mole in the Justice League, turning many of its members into bloodsuckers. After The Flash was mysteriously murdered, Batman and the rest of the Bat-Family sought to uncover the truth, leading to an altercation with Hal that exposed him as a vampire. While the Bat-Family was able to take Hal down with the help of Green Arrow, the victory came at enormous cost, with several Bat-Family members dead after the fighting.

Now, Batman once again has faced a corrupted Hal Jordan, this time with a horrifying magical power-up. In Batman/Superman: World's Finest #4 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, and Tamra Bonvillain, Batman and Superman were ambushed by Hal's Green Lantern, who was possessed by the series' terrifying foe, the devil Nezha. Because Hal's Green Lantern powers were bolstered by magic, he proved difficult to take down, as magic is one of Superman's weaknesses. Facing the World's Finest, Hal said, "I always knew I could take you two," expressing some resentment towards two of the Justice League's most popular members. Hal knows that he isn't as popular as Batman or Superman, but in his own mind, he is stronger than both of them together. This makes his ongoing feud with Batman, one of DC's most iconic heroes, even more tantalizing as he could easily overpower Bruce. This, in turn, forces the Dark Knight to think of ways to outsmart Hal.

Between DC vs Vampires and Batman/Superman: World's Finest, Hal Jordan's recurring role as a Batman foe is a brilliant opportunity to explore the fundamental ways the characters disagree with each other. Hal's Green Lantern role does not sit well with Red Hood in particular, and his almost limitless powers, thanks to his power ring, are a serious threat that Batman needs contingency plans for. But more than that, because Batman and Green Lantern have come to blows without Parallax's involvement, it's safe to say that there is already something innately part of Hal's character that is unleashed when he goes bad. DC vs Vampires and World's Finest both show Hal reacting to a fight against Batman as a challenging opportunity he is more than happy to accept, suggesting that their regular status as allies isn't as stable as one might think.

Hal Jordan's Green Lantern and Batman are two of the most stubborn members of the Justice League, making their clashes in DC vs Vampires and World's Finest all the more satisfying. Batman's lack of powers and street-level capabilities sharply contrasts the cosmic elements of Green Lantern lore. But at their core, both characters are deeply flawed human beings, and while magic and vampires gives them a reason to fight, it's clear that Batman and Green Lantern are more alike in their status as mere mortals than they'd like to admit.
