Batman lives in a world where few people match up to him in a one-on-one fight. His greatest enemies are people who have no skills as a fighter, like Joker, or those who manipulate others to do their dirty work for them, like Penguin and Carmine Falcone. However, Batman's rogues' gallery is huge, and he has some dangerous fighters coming after him on a regular basis.

Batman has trained in several fighting disciplines and it is a good thing because he has enemies who are extremely powerful. Batman has villains who have studied the same fighting forms he has, and some who are even more skilled in battle than he is. When fighting his most skilled enemies, it often takes more than a little luck for Batman to come out on top.

Solomon Grundy

Solomon Grundy rising from the swamp in a DC comic.

If based solely on strength, Solomon Grundy would rank as one of Batman's most dangerous enemies. However, it takes more than muscles to turn a villain into a great fighter. Cyrus Gold died and his body dumped in the Slaughter Swamp. He ended up crawling out of the swamp decades later as a destructive and violent creature. When he gets his hands on someone, they wouldn't stand a chance in a fight, but unlike other Batman villains, he doesn't have any tactical skills in a fight.

Victor Zsasz

Victor Zsasz marking his body.

To see how great of a fighter Victor Zsasz is, take one look at his body. Every time Zsasz kills someone, he scratches a mark on his body with a knife. There are well over 100 marks on his body, making him one of the worst serial killers in Gotham City. He isn't a big guy, but he has mastered knife fighting and has matched up with Batman more than once. As someone who doesn't like to use guns, he has had to perfect his fighting skills to end so many lives. This makes him a better fighter than someone like Solomon Grundy, but not up to the level of someone like Killer Croc.

Killer Croc

Killer Croc is one of the strongest villains to haunt Gotham City. Waylon Jones was once a crocodile wrestler, and his powers include great strength and durability, which he was born with. Killer Croc is also very intelligent, allowing him to plan out attacks, making him a better fighter than those who have substantial power but lack a game plan like Solomon Grundy.

He is one of Batman’s most powerful adversaries from a pure brute strength level, but his tactical skills as a fighter make him less a threat than martial artists and trained fighters like Ra's al Ghul and Bane, who are both masters at hand-to-hand combat.

Talon

Talon leaping into action against Batman.

In the New 52, Batman's most dangerous villains were the Court of Owls, a secret society that ruled over Gotham City for a very long time. This organization employs assassins known as Talons to deal with people who get in their way. Of these assassins, one in particular, is deadly and a master fighter who pushed both Batman and Nightwing to the limit. This is William Cobb, who was born in 1901 and joined the Court of Owls to make a difference in Gotham City, training to become a master fighter and assassin. He is also Dick Grayson's great grandfather, and it took his own grandson to stop him.

Ra's al Ghul

Ra’s al Ghul is a Batman enemy who runs the dangerous League of Assassins, whose deadly warriors are equal to Batman concerning fighting skills. What makes them special is that al Ghul trained them all as fighters, and trained other Batman villains as well.

Ra’s al Ghul also has access to the Lazarus Pit, making him immortal as long as he can get to it. Al Ghul can never die and has an army at his back to fight for him, increasing his deadly skills, while remaining someone who can go toe-to-toe with Batman and come out on top more often than not.

Bane

Bane charging into action.

Bane has always been one of the greatest fighters Batman ever faced and proved this when he broke the Bat. In the 'Knightfall' storyline in 1993 by Doug Moench and Chuck Dixon, Bane released several Batman villains and waited until they wore Batman down, showing his tactical skills.

Bane, who has superhuman strength and durability thanks to the super-steroid known as Venom, attacked and broke Batman’s back, taking the Caped Crusader out for over a year. Beating Batman in a fight proves his fighting prowess, although there are some who trained longer and have more skills like Talon and Lady Shiva.

The Batman Who Laughs

The Batman Who Laughs attacking.

While Joker is a powerful and deadly enemy, The Batman Who Laughs is a better fighter on every level. As dangerous as Joker is, as a fighter, he is one of Batman's weakest enemies. However, The Batman Who Laughs, created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, is Bruce Wayne from the Dark Multiverse, infected with Joker Venom.

This means that he is Batman with Joker’s mindset. He has all the fighting skills and abilities of Batman, but with the unreliable nature of Joker. In his world, he killed every hero, including Superman, proving his fighting skills are on the level with this world's Batman. It took Batman and Joker combined to stop him.

Prometheus

Prometheus preparing a fight with Batman.

Many younger fans learned about Prometheus when he showed up in Arrow’s fifth season. However, in comics, Prometheus is a Batman enemy, and he is even powerful enough to have taken on the entire Justice League before. He might not have the training of someone like Ra’s al Ghul, but he is a better fighter for other reasons.

Prometheus underwent undergone intense physical and mental training using technology and other equipment, honing his fighting skills the same way as Batman. He has fighting skills that duplicate the martial arts skills of 30 of Earth’s greatest fighters, including both Batman and Lady Shiva.

Deathstroke

DC: Deathstroke fighting with a longsword and dagger in the rain

Deathstroke is just like Batman, but with the bonus of regenerative abilities. As a fighter, Slade Wilson has mastered almost every weapon and his fighting skills mirror that of Batman, who most consider the best pure fighter in DC Comics. With similar techniques, but a willingness to cross lines Batman would never consider, he is a deadly enemy and one that could arguably match up to any hero he faced. The added advantage of regenerative abilities, similar to Wolverine in the Marvel Universe, makes Deathstroke someone who will never stay down and always come back for more, one of the greatest fighters Batman ever faced.

Lady Shiva

Lady Shiva fighting Catwoman.

Lady Shiva is one warrior that matches up perfectly with Batman, and she might be a better fighter than him. In DC Comics, Lady Shiva holds the rank of one of the best assassins and greatest martial artists on the entire planet. She has mastered no less than 10 different martial arts disciplines and has the added advantage of reading people's movements, predicting what they do before they even attack. Batman has called her the best fighter alive, and that is high praise. Luckily for Batman, she has worked as an ally as much as she has a villain.
