'Batman V Superman': Michael Shannon Hints at Zod's Fate

Man of Steel General Zod

Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is now less than a year away from opening in theaters (at the time of writing this), and more and more details are coming out about the movie's story. Following events in Man of Steel, Snyder's film - the second chapter in the DC Extended Universe - will focus on the dynamic between Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill), while introducing new cinematic versions of two very anticipated characters: Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Lex Luthor (Jessie Eisenberg). Aquaman (Jason Momoa) is confirmed to appear as well, but it's looking like his role will be more limited.

The Batman v Superman Comic-Con trailer gave fans a lot to think about. From the big heroes in action to more mysterious moments, the trailer was loaded with hints about what the narrative has in store for fans. However, one shot really piqued everyone's interest: a quick look at the deceased General Zod (Michael Shannon) being transported by Lex's assistant, Mercy Graves (Tao Okamoto). Is Lex merely studying Krypotnian physiology to find one of Superman's weaknesses, or is there a bigger role in store for Zod? There's been plenty of rumors about a potentially spoilery twist for Zod ("twist" being a very unintentional pun), and now Michael Shannon himself has given those rumors additional weight.

Batman V Superman Trailer - Zod is Doomsday

When Michael Shannon spoke to Variety, he revealed his role in BvS consists of more than just being spotted as a corpse - he'll undergo a transformation of some kind. In Man of Steel, Shannon's armor was CGI, but this time around, he's wearing "wax flippers" on his hands. Obviously, being unable to use your fingers could make seemingly simple, everyday tasks difficult, and that's exactly what happened to the actor when he found himself stuck inside a Porta Potty on the set of BvS:

"I was in my costume, and I couldn’t use my fingers because in the sequel I have flippers instead of hands."

"So I had these wax flippers on my fingers, and I couldn’t open the door, and I could hear Zack [Snyder, the director] being like, 'Where’s Shannon? Where the f*** is he?' and the whole crew was standing around. I was like, knocking on the door with my flippers, 'Let me out of here!"

If he couldn't open the door, one can't help but wonder how he was even able to use the bathroom in the first place. Maybe he put the "flippers" on after (hopefully) washing his hands? At any rate, a "craft-service guy" was able to rescue Shannon from being forever trapped in the Porta Potty. When asked about why he's wearing the objects on his fingers, Shannon explained he couldn't reveal anything just yet, and instead offered amusing alternatives:

"Well, I haven’t seen the trailer either, so I don’t know what I am in the trailer. I could be a toaster, or a Porsche, I don’t know."

Could Lex's grand plan be creating a Kryptonite toaster with flippers? Obviously not, but it's understandable Shannon is remaining tight-lipped about his role since it's clear Warner Bros. wants it to remain a mystery. His character - while deceased, of course - was only briefly spotted in the trailer, and several of the action shots were clearly edited to prevent us from seeing who's dishing out some of the attacks. It's very possible the heat vision Batman dodges in the trailer - while not in his armor, mind you - didn't come from Superman, but instead from whatever Zod becomes.

Batman V Superman Doomsday

This may just seem like a lighthearted story, but it's interesting news because it confirms Shannon's playing more than a lifeless body. Considering the fact BvS' synopsis says "a new threat quickly arises" and WB is attempting to keep information about the villain's transformation limited, this makes the rumors that he could be turned into Doomsday (or perhaps even a mesh of several Superman villains, like Doomsday, Bizarro, and possibly even Metallo) more believable.

Doomsday tends to have enormous and sharp fingers, so with the magic of CGI, those "flippers" could appear as part of the villain's deadly hands. In a recent rumor, it was even stated that this version of Doomsday will grow "bone blades" to replace lost limbs - weapons that could, assumedly, be what has Shannon wearing flippers (markers for CGI renders of bone blades) . As for how Shannon's "transformed" foe could be incorporated, all signs point to Lex experimenting on Zod's body. Not only will he want to see how he can harm Superman - Zod's fellow Kryptonian - but he could also strive to create a super-powered soldier that'll obey his every command. If that really is Luthor's objective, it feels safe to assume it probably won't go as planned for him.
