Besides the titular heroes of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice facing-off on the big screen, one thing fans of DC Comics and the emerging DC Extended Universe want to see is the first movie appearance of Wonder Woman, who will be played by Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious). Wonder Woman will get her own movie in 2017, but the most recent Batman V Superman trailer confirmed that we will first get to see her in action in that film - not just looking gorgeous in party dress, trading sultry looks with Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne.

After months of rumors about why, exactly Wonder Woman suits up in armor and draws a sword to do battle, comes yet another rumor to echo the growing chorus of claims about Dawn of Justice's climatic showdown. And if you've been a longtime follower of this movie, it's pretty much what you'd expect.

Welcome to Doomsday

Superman vs Doomsday vs Batman

According to Heroic Hollywood, Wonder Woman suits up to do battle with none other than Doomsday, the infamous monster who killed Superman in the '90s "Death of Superman" story arc, and his since become a staple of the DC Comics universe.

Here is the specific breakdown of Wonder Woman's fight against Doomsday, as described by El Mayimbe of HH:

During the fight with Doomsday, Wonder Woman draws that awesome sword of hers, swings it at Doomsday and manages to chop off the hand of the beast!... Wonder Woman is badass and got skills but don't count Doomsday out! He is still in the fight! Complications ensue because a BONE BLADE grows back where Doomsday's hand used to be! In screenwriting that's called a reversal. Now Doomsday got a blade of his own.

What happens next?

Find out when Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice drops in theaters on March 25, 2016.

Batman V Superman - Wonder Woman vs Doomsday

Since early on in production, it was rumored that Zack Snyder and Co. would be using the character of Doomsday in some way. In fact, before they were confirmed to be headlining DC films like Shazam and Aquaman, it was rumored that strong-man actors like Dwayne Johnson or Jason Mamoa could be doing the motion-capture work for the Doomsday creature; while it remains to be seen how Doomsday would be designed and created onscreen, his inclusion remains a sensible plot development for several reasons:

  1. It gives Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) a way to lure Superman into another catastrophic battle.
  2. It gives Lex means to kill Superman.
  3. It gives the filmmakers a big climatic battle baddie, and a means to unite Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman around a common foe.
  4. It creates a situation where Superman's power, Batman's brains, and Wonder Woman's warrior training are all essential to winning the fight.

Batman V Superman Trailer - Zod is Doomsday

The origin for Doomsday in Batman V Superman seems fairly obvious, just from the hints in the trailer: With General Zod's corpse in Lex Luthor's hands, it's easy to assume the billionaire genius extracts Kryptonian DNA and uses it to create a monster that can rival Superman. A simple and efficient way to get a worthy showdown and further redeem the storyline of Man of Steel, as Superman's great sin (killing Zod) would lead to an even bigger threat like Doomsday.

Early on I speculated that this version of Doomsday could also blend together that DC villain with someone like Bizarro - we'll know how that pans out when we finally see an official design for this "final battle creature" - assuming this long strain of rumors is correct.
