Batman V Superman International TV Trailer: The Battle Begins

Warner Bros mega-hyped superhero battle-royale, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, is finally beginning its rollout en route to a full release next week (at the time of writing this). Some entertainment press are reported to have already screened the film, theaters are bracing for the crowds and the international press events are becoming ubiquitous enough that we're beginning to glean plot details from Jeep commercials and overheard audio samples.

At this point, the number one question on audiences' minds may well be whether or not there are still any questions to have after the unprecedented marketing campaign - one which befits what some have claimed could be the most expensive movie ever made. Now, at least one more trailer has emerged with a few more precious slivers of new footage, recently posted to the Warner Bros. Korean Facebook page.

While fans could be forgiven for assuming that there's nothing new to glean from each new trailer, as so many of them have appeared to recycle the same few dozen major scenes and individual shots, this Batman V Superman spot actually does feature elements of genuine interest to the curious DC fan - not entirely surprising, as trailers for U.S. films cut for markets in Asia are often notable for being less averse to spoiling major plot details or diverging from what Western audiences were expected to be most interested in. For example: The new spot eschews dialogue exchanges save for Lex Luthor's (Jesse Eisenberg's) by now familiar "Greatest gladiator match of all time!" speech, and instead focuses on hero-shots of the main characters from angles we've largely not yet seen before. That includes a fresh shot of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman in her civilian identity and Batman using a what looks like a remote-electrocution device on a group of thugs.

However, what will surely draw the most attention are new and extended shots of what fans have taken to calling the "Knightmare" sequence, which depicts Batman fighting against an evil Superman who looks to be commanding an army of storm troopers (and maybe winged aliens?) in a post-apocalyptic setting - a nightmare (or a prophetic vision?) that convinces Bruce Wayne that Superman is his enemy. Notably, this includes Batman seeming to raise his hands in surrender (or just fear?) to some unknown attacker the return of a brief shot of Batman looking out at a ruined city (Metropolis? Gotham? Somewhere else?) where a gigantic "Omega" symbol has been carved into the Earth by unknown forces.

DC fans, of course, will immediately recognize the Omega symbol as being prominently associated with Darkseid, the alien warlord of Planet Apokolips - considered one of if not the most powerful and evil beings in the DC Universe. Created by Jack Kirby as part of his ambitious New Gods franchise, Darkseid seeks to dominate the universe through mastery of The Anti-Life Equation; and has long been considered the only DC villain powerful enough to be an ultimate threat for the live-action Justice League movies due to follow Batman V Superman. He also commands winged henchmen called Parademons, who look remarkably similar to the creatures seen in previous trailers' "Knightmare" footage.
