In just under two months (as of this writing), Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will hit theaters, launching the DC Extended Universe. One of the film's many objectives is to introduce new cinematic versions of Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) and his loyal butler Alfred (Jeremy Irons). With Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy still fresh in many viewers' minds, the onus is on Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder to ensure that his iterations stand out as something unique to the big screen.
Fortunately, he seems to have been successful with that goal. Affleck's Caped Crusader has been sold as an older, hardened Batman who dishes out punishment in rather extreme ways. In addition, Irons mentioned a while back that his Alfred will be more hands-on than what moviegoers have seen before. But that doesn't mean there won't be any similarities, if the British thespian's latest quotes on the character are any indication.
Speaking with Empire, Irons discussed playing Alfred, saying that the butler has "lived longer than Bruce, and so perhaps he has a clearer perspective on life." From the trailers, it sounds like Alfred will be bestowing words of wisdom to his beloved Master Wayne, helping him see the world in a new light (particularly when it comes to Superman). It's that aspect of the character that informs Alfred's greatest role: surrogate father and protector of Bruce Wayne:
“As well as having been in loco parentis to Bruce, his only remit in life is to protect him. And, as those of us who have raised children, let alone Batmen, will know, that is quite a wide remit.”
While Dawn of Justice's Alfred is going to differentiate from previous portrayals in certain ways, it would appear that the spirit of the character remains intact. The idea of Alfred looking to protect Bruce is nothing new for the films to explore, as it was something Michael Caine's version tried very hard to do. Exploring the dynamic between the two is always one of the more fascinating elements of Batman films, and from the looks of it, screenwriter Chris Terrio has crafted some intriguing interactions between Bruce and Alfred as they formulate the best course of action after the emergence of Kal-El.
Recent images from the film show that one way Alfred helps protect Batman is by aiding in the construction of the armored Batsuit Bruce uses in his fight against Superman. The costume has been heavily featured in marketing materials, and fans that have taken a liking to it will be pleased to know that they can soon bring it home. Hot Toys has revealed a 1/6 scale figure from their Batman V Superman line, depicting Affleck's Wayne as he prepares for "the greatest gladiator match in the history of the world." Check out an image below. The rest of the photo gallery is on their Facebook page.
The movie-accurate figure has a variety of features, including an armored head with LED light-up eyes and two interchangeable lower face pieces modeled after Affleck's likeness. It also includes detailed Batman weapons, armor with weathering effects, and a special Batman V Superman figure stand. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the Batsignal shown in some of the images is part of the package, but it would still make a fine addition to anyone's collection.
