Batman V Superman Rumors: Doomsday's Role & a Dream Sequence

Like many of its tentpole brethren, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is no stranger to the ever-churning rumor mill as fans eagerly await and anticipate its theatrical debut. In recent months, supposed details on how the two titular heroes begin their fight and a possible cameo for Jared Leto's Joker have come out (among other reports), illustrating that even in post-production, rumors and speculation about these big films can run rampant.

One of the most persistent rumors about Dawn of Justice deals with an appearance by the Superman villain Doomsday, who is best known for his role in the "Death of Superman" comic book arc. And while we're still awaiting official word on his inclusion, it sounds more and more like Doomsday will could a part to play in Zack Snyder's superhero crossover event as the film's "muscle."

The latest update comes courtesy of super-scooper Umberto Gonzalez, who was on the Shanlian on Batman podcast to dish out an exclusive he had on Batman v Superman. According to him, Doomsday (who he says "looks incredible") will be featured in the movie:

"It's been out there, but it's official. We are going to see Doomsday."

Gonzalez likens Doomsday's part in the film to that of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars - in that he is the brawn that "main villain" Lex Luthor goes to when he needs a physical threat (similar to how Vader was Grand Moff Tarkin's muscle in Star Wars). That dynamic certainly makes sense. While Luthor represents a great danger with his massive intellect, he wouldn't pose much of a challenge to Superman and Batman (and Wonder Woman?) in a fight - unless he was wearing some sort of armor. On the other hand, Doomsday is one of the few DC Comics villains who has the potential to be lethal toward Kal-El, so Luthor unleashing Doomsday on the heroes is a logical way for the story to conclude.

If there's anything here that will give readers pause, it's that the film went through principal photography completely with only a handful of rumors about Doomsday and nothing else. Neither Snyder nor anyone at Warner Bros. announced that the character would be in Batman v Superman (nor an actor playing him), and Doomsday is a large enough presence that if he were a part of the movie, someone probably would have said something by now. There's always a chance the filmmakers want his "reveal" to be a "surprise," but there have been so many reports about Doomsday, that it's plausible somebody would have wanted to clear the air by now if there was fire to the smoke.

Michael Shannon in Man of Steel

A few months back, it was rumored that Michael Shannon (who played General Zod in Man of Steel) would be coming back for the sequel, with Luthor acquiring Zod's corpse and running experiments on it (triggering the Doomsday genome). According to the report, Zod's body would be used as a sentient host to create Doomsday via genetic manipulation. And while mum's the word on a Shannon cameo, it definitely lines up with earlier rumors we've heard about the film's plot. Without much else to go off of, it certainly sounds like Kal-El and Bruce Wayne will have to beat up on Doomsday in some kind of epic boss fight to end the film.

Gonzalez also had one other scoop about Batman v Superman to share, regarding the line of dialogue that caps off the teaser trailer. When asked if it is Doomsday (and not Batman, as hypothesized) who asks Superman if he bleeds, Gonzalez stated that the line is actually part of a dream sequence in Dawn of Justice (and didn't elaborate after that). This is the first word we've gotten on dream sequences showing up in the film, so take it with a grain of salt. As always, we'll just have to wait and see, but there's plenty to discuss and speculate about.
