Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is right around the corner, and excitement is building for this epic showdown between two of the most famous superheroes of all time. Recently, we learned that a sneak peak of the film would air during Gotham's midseason finale, and it appears that the film's marketing will continue building steam.
Though Man of Steel was the first entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Batman V Superman will be the cornerstone for the future of the franchise, including standalone films like Wonder Woman and team-ups in Justice League. We've seen some promotional artwork recently, but now we have our first look at some literary tie-in materials featuring new designs of Batman and Superman.
IGN has a roundup of upcoming books, spotted on Amazon, with new artwork attached. The first is an original tie-in novel called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Cross Fire, by Michael Kogge. According to Amazon, the book tells an original story set before the events of Batman v Superman. Check out the artwork below.
The others are full-color flip books that provide you with "everything fans need to know about the stars of the new film." The Amazon listing features two books in one, one that focuses on Superman, and another that focuses on Batman. All three books are published by Scholastic and will be released on February 16, 2016, just over a month before the release of the feature film.
Aside from the artwork, it's interesting to see DC's approach to tie-in material. In the case of Cross Fire, this will be the first time a major superhero film franchise has had a prequel-novel tie-in. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe occasionally published comics that prelude the films, they have never used novels (junior or adult) to tell an original story in their universe. Ben Affleck mentioned that DC's plans for the DCEU are huge, so we may only see the tip of the iceberg with these tie-in materials and DC's film roster.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will see theatrical release on March 25th, 2016, followed by Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23rd, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17th, 2017; The Flash on March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman on July 27th, 2018; Shazam on April 5th, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14th, 2019; Cyborg on April 3rd, 2020; and Green Lantern on June 19th, 2020. The Superman and Batman solo films have release dates TBD.
