It seems as though Batman: The Telltale Series is getting a Special Edition re-release and new DLC. Batman: The Telltale Series is an episodic choose-your-own adventure game, much in the style of Telltale's other adapted offerings such as The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. The first season of Telltale's Batman released back in 2016 to strong reviews.
Last year, Telltale Games went through an especially arduous period. In September 2018, it was announced the world-famous developer would be shutting down. Subsequently, hundreds of Telltale employees lost their jobs and the studio's assets were liquidated and sold off to the highest bidder. Just a few months ago, LCG Entertainment attained the rights to Telltale's assets and expressed hope in resurrecting the studio. One way in which LCG hopes to generate revenue is by re-releasing existing IPs, so that the profits can then be used to fund new games.
Gematsu first reported the news that Batman: The Telltale Series would be receiving a re-release. The special edition of the game is called The Telltale Batman Shadows Edition and includes "Batman: The Telltale Series base game and new DLC." However, it seems strange the Shadows Edition doesn't also include the second season of Telltale's Batman series, Batman: The Enemy Within, as well. The announcement was made in a now-deleted press release which mentioned Telltale's Batman Season 2 but did not say it was included.
The Batman Shadows Edition also comes with some cool new features. The former press release said the game has gone through an aesthetic change, now featuring "a noir-style visual makeover and graphical upgrade." The original release was very much inspired by the look and feel of classic noir, embracing the hard-boiled detective side of Batman, so it's exciting to hear the Shadows Edition will be embracing this style as it could give the re-release a unique allure to both new players and returning ones. For those who already own Telltale's Batman, the Shadows Edition will only be a five dollar upgrade. As for graphics, it's not much of a surprise they're being upgraded, as Telltale infamously struggled with their game engine which caused the graphics of all their titles to remain virtually the same. This doesn't mean their art style doesn't have it's own unique charm, because it does, but technically speaking, the graphics simply weren't improving like their competitors.
A year ago it seemed impossible Telltale would be in the position they are today. Although the company isn't fully back, it's nice to know they're on a track towards something similar. Telltale is one of the most revered developers in the world and was at the forefront of putting player choice and narrative into the hands of gamers, and it was a shame they had to even undergo the process of closing to begin with. Hopefully players will hear more good news about Telltale soon, and according to that now-deleted press release, The Telltale Batman Shadows Edition should be available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch for $29.99.
