Batman meets a deadly new foe in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown in a new fan-made mashup trailer. Following a lackluster summer at the movie box office, it's been an exciting fall in theaters for fans with the stunning box office of IT, the first big screen adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling novel from 1986.
Propelled by the nightmares created by the TV miniseries from 1990 starring Tim Curry as Pennywise, moviegoers have been turning up in droves to see Bill Skarsgard's version of the murderous clown, setting several records including the biggest opener for a horror film ever, and highest-grossing R-rated horror film ever. And while Justice League doesn't open for another couple months, one of the principal members of the DC Extended Universe superhero team is looking to let the air out of Pennywise's red balloon.
Thanks to an ingenious fan-made trailer from YouTube user Adeel of Steel, a dream scenario (or nightmare, depending on your point-of-view) is coming to life with a mashup imagining a matchup between Batman (Ben Affleck) and Pennywise. Officially titled Batman vs IT/Pennywise, the trailer is assembled of footage from Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and of course, IT.
The dark atmosphere of BvS provides a perfect set-up for the trailer, which expertly merges the underground settings of both the superhero film and IT. Like he did in BvS, Batman has obtained heavily-encrypted computer files, but instead of trying to unravel the mysteries behind Aquaman, Cyborg, The Flash and Wonder Woman, he's looking for a demented clown – and it's not the Joker.
We see Batman having nightmares that wake him up, but the horrific visions are of Pennywise, the (Dancing) Clown Prince of Derry, Maine. Pennywise is so disturbing, in fact, that it even has an imprisoned Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) freaking out ("He's found us," Luthor warns in a panicked state). Despite warnings from his loyal butler/tech support Alfred Pennyworth (Jeremy Irons, in voiceover), Batman forgoes Gotham city's fear of clowns (featuring a quick cut in of Jared Leto's Joker and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn) and embarks on a collision course with Pennywise – and the result is an epic showdown between good and evil. It's a shame the movie doesn't exist.
Clearly Adeel of Steel took great care in the making of the Batman v Pennywise fan-trailer, doing far more than just cutting together scenes from BvS and IT to construct the narrative. Here, the YouTuber delves into the childhood trauma of Bruce Wayne/Batman and melds it with the psychological terror Pennywise is inflicting upon The Losers Club in Derry, making the whole idea of the two facing off against each other in a film seem completely plausible.
