Warning: Spoilers ahead for Batman/Superman: World's Finest #3

Though magic is thought to be one of Superman's biggest weaknesses, it turns out he has a pretty solid workaround for that. Some quick thinking from the Man of Steel shows that he can take on magic foes in spite of their advantage over his tremendous power.

While Superman is considered one of the strongest characters in the DC Universe, even he has a few Achille's heels his enemies aren't afraid to exploit. Everyone knows about Kryptonite and the colorful varieties they come in, each with their own unfortunate side effect. Red sun has also been known to bring Kal-El down to roughly average human levels. But the most curious weakness Clark has demonstrated is his vulnerability to magic. No matter how capable Superman is, the chaotic forces wielded by morally deficient magic users can cut through his strength and leave him absolutely powerless.

And while it's true that Superman can't completely overcome magic, that doesn't mean he can't outwit the people who use it. Clark demonstrated how he can beat the notorious dark wizard Felix Faust in Batman/Superman: World's Finest #3 by Mark Waid and Dan Mora. Faust has trapped Batman and Superman in a literal hell, complete with fires and demons. Batman finds himself overwhelmed by the experience and implores Superman to do something. The Man of Steel calmly asks for silence as he grips a Batarang. Before anyone knows what's happened, Superman throws it, and makes a direct hit to Faust, ending the nightmare. Clark tells Faust that he knew the villain wouldn't pass up an opportunity to see his enemies suffer, so all he had to do was listen for a heartbeat that didn't belong.

Of course, all Faust did was conjure up a vision and Superman was never in actual danger. But Clark admits that when dealing with a possible illusion, he can't go around punching things, leading him to choose a more clever way of dispatching Faust. The entire experience is a good reminder that when confronted with a force that could potentially overpower him physically, Superman's mental abilities are just as powerful as the rest of him. Magic is an odd and wildly inconsistent thing in the DC Universe. But while every user may have their own way of dealing with spells and curses, Superman is vulnerable to any kind of arcane forces. With such a wildly known weakness as his, Clark has to be on guard against anyone looking to use magic to dispatch the Man of Steel.

Superman's encounter with Faust shows that a calm approach and a level head can help him figure out a plan no matter what he finds himself up against. Magic may be one of Clark's better-known weaknesses, but as long as his keen mind is in tact, it's nothing Superman can't overcome.
