Warning: spoilers ahead for Batman/Superman #17!

Batman and Superman's new enemy is the director of DC Comics. The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel have met their match with the one being who can alter their realities as easily as any comic writer. With the amount of control he has over the story being told, DC's villainous director may cause irreparable damage.

In this series, stories and ways of telling them are being experimented with. The first two issues of this new arc for Batman/Superman have introduced the Archive of Worlds, the World of the Knight, and the World of Tomorrow. The Archive of Worlds exists in the DC reality that fans are most familiar with, where Batman and Superman's origins are standard and the two work together. The World of the Knight is a world in which Superman didn't make it to Earth alive and only Batman and Robin exist as the main heroes. The World of Tomorrow is a world with Superman, but where Bruce Wayne never became Batman - though the world without Batman has not been explored in great detail just yet.

Batman/Superman #17 by Gene Luen Yang and Ivan Reis reveals the main enemy in the series' newest arc. The alternate Batman and Superman realities are being controlled by Autuer.io - the Director of the Archive of Worlds. Their worlds are colliding and crashing as their new foe makes changes and rewrites their stories. Autuer.io knows he is in control and he doesn't want it any other way.

Autuer.io is definitely a play on the term auteur, which is a filmmaker or director who is very controlling of their vision of films - enough to where they are believed to be the sole creator of the work. This matches perfectly with the theme of Batman/Superman, which harkens back to old film serials and features splicing of film reels. This robotic being is calling all the shots and he is scripting Batman and Superman in their own main reality. If it isn't enough that he can write the script of the story and bend alternate realities to his will, Autuer.io can also pull objects out of the worlds he is directing. This includes a band of kryptonite that provides him an upper hand over Superman - predictable, but this foe probably doesn't take criticism of his work too well.

If Autuer.io can control not just alternate realities, but also the main reality Batman and Superman exist in, his power over DC comics could be almost limitless. As of yet, the series has not addressed any potential weaknesses he has, though he is perfectly capable of exploiting others'. Without noticeable weaknesses, there is nothing that is truly stopping him from rewriting any character's or world's story. He can pull all the strings and direct all the action like a deity. At this point, his ultimate goal is not known and until a weakness is revealed, Autuer.io can do as he wishes. He is the in-story equivalent of a comic writer and that makes him the real director of DC Comics - at least until Batman and Superman can figure out how to bring him down.
