George Clooney says he also hated Batman & Robin’s silly freeze puns. Released in 1997, the fourth film in the Batman franchise saw Clooney taking over the role of the Caped Crusader with Chris O’Donnell as his sidekick Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy.

Batman & Robin also marked the second go-around for Joel Schumacher at the helm of a Batman film after 1995’s Batman Forever, and unfortunately for fans of the DC comics character, the director’s campiest instincts came out during the film’s creation. Schumacher’s eccentric and over-the-top approach infamously resulted in some bizarre missteps, including Batman’s costume sporting prominent nipples, as well as a script riddled with some of the silliest one-liners in movie history. Overall, Batman & Robin was a failure with audiences and critics, and is now widely considered the worst of all the Batman movies with just an 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Batman & Robin star Clooney to his credit has always been more-than-willing to speak up about the resounding dud of a film, criticizing his own performance while happily pointing out the movie’s many other failings. In a new interview with GQ (via MovieWeb), Clooney again discussed his culpability in the Batman & Robin disaster while maligning the film for its cringeworthy dialog:

"The only way you can honestly talk about things is to include yourself and your shortcomings in those things. Like, when I say Batman & Robin's a terrible film, I always go, 'I was terrible in it.' Because I was, number one. But also because then it allows you the ability to say, 'Having said I sucked in it, I can also say that none of these other elements worked, either.' You know? Lines like 'Freeze, Freeze!'"

Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze was indeed the biggest perpetrator of terrible Batman & Robin lines, uttering atrocious would-be zingers like "Let's kick some ice!" and "You're not sending me to the cooler!" - a truly disappointing development given the many great Schwarzenegger one-liners from other movies. Not to be outdone, Thurman’s Poison Ivy too got in on the bad dialog act, letting loose with the groan-worthy line "Sorry, my vines have a crush on you” while unleashing her killer plants on Batman. Clooney’s Batman of course got a chance to embarrass himself as well, intoning “Never leave the cave without it” during an unspeakable gag about his Bat credit card.

By now these and the many other failings of Batman & Robin have been so well-cataloged that it almost seems pointless to go over the disaster again. Thankfully, the Batman franchise was able to recover thanks to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which cleared away every last vestige of Schumacher camp to deliver a gritty and dark vision of Batman. Thanks to Christian Bale’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne in Nolan’s movies, the world mostly forgot about Clooney’s dreadful performance and his nipple Batsuit. But it seems that despite the world having moved on, Clooney himself hasn’t entirely gotten over the disappointment of appearing in Batman & Robin, the consensus worst film in the entire series.
