Matt Reeves’ The Batman, now officially starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, is rumored to also include Robin. After Ben Affleck officially left the character of Batman behind following his appearance in Justice League, speculation ran hot and heavy over which Hollywood star would next don the cowl and cape and become Gotham’s Dark Knight. Following what was no doubt a ferocious fight among several hot younger actors, Robert Pattinson has officially been tapped to play Batman.

Of course, it’s long been known that Matt Reeves would be the next man to both write and direct the newest Batman film. Reeves has been putting his movie together for a couple of years now, but little is known about his plans for where he wants to take character. It has, however, been reported that the Penguin may be one of the movie’s big villains, potentially together with The Riddler. Catwoman may also showing up in some capacity. Beyond that, no other Batman characters are firmly reported, let alone confirmed.

Now, however, there is rumor that another Batman character may appear in Matt Reeves’ upcoming take on the Caped Crusader. According to Forbes, Batman’s fabled sidekick, Robin is potentially in line to join the movie’s cast. There's little more to the rumor than that, however, which suggests this should all be taken with a very large grain of salt.

If Robin does join The Batman, it would mark the first appearance by the Boy Wonder in the franchise since Chris O’Donnell played him in 1997’s ill-fated Batman & Robin. Of course, Robin has appeared many times in various other Batman-related media, including the TV series Titans, Batman: The Animated Series, The LEGO Batman Movie and obviously the original Batman TV show where he was played by Burt Ward. Robin made an unofficial appearance in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises with the character of Blake, Batman’s semi-sidekick played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The character is also alluded to in both Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, but Robin never actually appears in either film.

If it’s true that Robin is set to appear in The Batman, the next question is which incarnation of Robin will it be? In the comics, Robin has multiple alter egos, including Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Damian Wayne (who is was actually Batman’s son). As the comics have already featured a female Robin in Stephanie Brown, perhaps Reeves will to do the same and cast a woman to be his cinematic version of the character.

Again, reports that Robin is set to re-join the cinematic Batman universe for the first time since 1997 are at this point far from being set in stone. It remains to be seen how everything plays out regarding which characters will appear in The Batman and who will be playing them. But given that Pattinson has finally been officially announced as having landed the title role, more casting news is sure to revealed sooner than later.
