Penguin and Catwoman will reportedly be villains in Matt Reeves' upcoming solo The Batman movie. It has been a long road for Warner Bros. and DC Films to get another standalone Batman movie off the ground. Originally slated to have Ben Affleck star, write, and direct, he has since left the role and DC behind altogether. The reigns of the hopeful franchise now rest in the hands of War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves, who is in the process of casting the next big screen Batman, with recent reports pointing to Robert Pattinson being the top choice.

The possibility of Reeves nearing his selection for his version of Bruce Wayne is the latest positive sign of movement for The Batman, which is otherwise gearing up to start production later this year or early 2020. Reeves is still working away at the script apparently, but his general story does appear to be in place. With that being the case and Pattinson's possible casting, fans of the Dark Knight are eager to find out who he could go up against in this film.

According to a report from THR, Reeves is planning to use several villains in The Batman, with Oswald Cobblepot (aka Penguin) being one of the main antagonists. In addition to his likely appearance, they also teased that Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) is going to be involved in the film as well by mentioning that a "purrfect character" is included in Reeves' script. However, these two foes may not be the only ones either, as one source told THR that around a half-dozen villains could appear.

If this report is accurate, then The Batman could be a bit of a familiar sight for moviegoers. Tim Burton previously used both Penguin and Catwoman in Batman Returns, where Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer portrayed the respective villains, and both characters even appeared in Batman: The Movie. Catwoman has received additional screen time in the years that followed, as Halle Berry played her in a solo film and Anne Hathaway did the same in The Dark Knight Rises.

While some fans of the caped crusader may prefer to see other characters from Batman's rich rogues gallery brought to screen for the first time or given a bigger role, we don't have any clues as to how Reeves could bring Penguin and Catwoman to the big screen with his own twist. This news will also leave fans wondering who could fill these roles. Josh Gad's continued teasing on social media about playing Penguin, which has left many wondering if he has already discussed the part with Reeves or has even been secretly cast. If both of these villains do appear in The Batman, then whoever is cast in the roles will have quite the challenge of separating themselves from past iterations of the characters.
