The answer to The Riddler's first riddle in The Batman has been solved. For the first installment of Matt Reeves' Batman franchise, he's decided to put multiple villains in the movie to face off against Robert Pattinson's Batman. New versions of Catwoman and Penguin will appear in The Batman, but neither of them will be the main villain. As made clear in the first trailer for the new DC movie, Paul Dano's Edward Nashton aka The Riddler will be at the center of the crimes Batman tries to solve.

Even though the trailer for The Batman never showed Dano's face, Riddler is unquestionably the man underneath the mask who is going around Gotham killing multiple people, including the city's mayor. After killing mayor Don Mitchell, The Riddler left Batman with his first set of clues to solve the case. Nashton wrote "No More Lies" on Mitchell's duct-taped covered face and left a card for Batman that asked, "What does a LIAR do when he is DEAD?" The question has left fans searching for the answer to the riddle, but the card included a secret code that provided the answer.

The solution to Riddler's riddle starts with recognizing the mysterious symbols as an alphabetic substitution cipher, meaning that each one corresponds to a letter of the alphabet. Repeating symbols are usually a surefire sign of a substitution cipher, since there are only 26 letters in the alphabet and the five vowels are used frequently. Several repeating symbols helped crack the code and reveal that the answer to the riddle is "He lies still." Without diving too deep into the process of deciphering the code, the answer used the substitutes for "E," "I," and "S" twice and "L" three times. That only left "H" and "T" to be solved once the other symbols were placed with their proper letters.

The Batman opens a card from the Riddler

The answer to The Riddler's first riddle is quite straight forward. By using a play on words and the dual meaning of lies, Riddler has a clever question and answer for Batman to solve. While the answer provides a literal explanation of what a liar does when he is dead, it also emphasizes how his lies are still part of him and last beyond his own life. This could be because there are lies Mitchell previously told that will still be perceived to be true after he is gone. In other words, the corruption Matt Reeves talked up in the DC FanDome panel is far more widespread than could be ended by killing only Mitchell.

In the grand scheme of The Riddler's plan, finding the solution to this first riddle won't just be helpful for this detective heavy Batman story, but also fans. There are now six symbols known to be associated with specific letters of the alphabet so that only leaves 20 more to go. As the marketing for The Batman continues, more of Riddler's coded messages and answers will likely be included. Now when the time comes to solve the rest, we'll be one step closer to doing so.
