Colin Farrell, who plays Penguin in the upcoming DC Extended Universe movie The Batman, praised the film's script, saying it's unlike any previous version of Batman he's seen before. Farrell will play the classic Batman villain alongside Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader, as well as Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman. Paul Dano (The Riddler), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), Andy Serkis (Alfred) and Peter Sarsgaard (D.A. Gil Colson) round out the cast.

The movie is a fresh reboot of the character, focusing on a young Bruce Wayne in his early years as the vigilante Batman. Matt Reeves wrote the script and is directing after Ben Affleck left the project prior to officially quitting the role. Despite production starting in January, The Batman has yet to complete filming, as filming had to be halted back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, and has yet to pick back up again. Little is known about the plot of The Batman as of now, but a number of the main cast have spoken about the quality of the script in the past.

Now, The Metro reports Farrell has added his voice to that chorus, saying the script is incredibly original and it feels like a version he hasn't seen on screen before. Farrell focuses on the fact Reeves has managed to create a version of the character that feels both familiar and novel at the same time, and adds that he is excited and ecstatic to be part of the movie. You can see his full quote below.

"The whole prospect is really exciting. I’m ecstatic to be part of that universe. There are certain words that are part of my internal lexicon and those words are Gotham City, Penguin, Joker, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent… all of those things. I have been watching the Batman films with my kids, but this script is something that feels incredibly original. It leans into it but it doesn’t borrow; it’s born of the mythology of that character, Bruce Wayne, Batman and Gotham. But it feels like a treatment and a version that I hadn’t seen before. Matt Reeves has done an incredible job of keeping it familiar and at the same time unique and new. It’s really exciting to be a part of it."

Little is known about the scope of Farrell's role as Penguin in The Batman, besides the actor himself saying that it's not a large one. Despite this, he is clearly a fan of Reeves' vision for The Batman and hopefully will be involved in the DCEU beyond just this first movie. It's also interesting to note that Farrell doesn't think the script borrows from any previous movies, hopefully pointing to a fresh and original story that we haven't seen in Batman movies before.

Farrell's words are comforting to those who might have been worried about the troubled history of The Batman, with Affleck writing a script and then leaving the project, and then Reeves taking over with his own vision impacting the quality of the final product. Based on Farrell's sentiments, as well as those of Kravitz, who called the script phenomenal, fans are in for a treat.

Of course, movie stars are paid to talk up the projects they're starring in, so these comments should be treated with caution. But at this stage the signs all point to The Batman being an exciting movie that will stand alongside the best movie versions of the Caped Crusader.
