With his Cobra Kai co-star, Xolo Maridueña set to join the DC Extended Universe as Blue Beetle, Tanner Buchanan has thrown his hat in the ring to play Robin opposite Robert Pattinson's Batman. A sequel series to the beloved classic The Karate KidCobra Kai focuses on Danny LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence's inability to let their rivalry go. Buchanan plays Robby Keene, the delinquent son of William Zabka's Johnny in the series. Thus far the character has seen a significant transformation as he learnt to control his rage and frustration under the tutelage of Ralph Macchio's Danny LaRusso before reverting back to his old ways as part of John Kreese's (Martin Kove) darker Cobra Kai, but not without a great deal of inner turmoil.

Buchanan has previously appeared in shows like Designated Survivor as Leo Kirkman, the son of Kiefer Sutherland's President Kirkman, and in the Boy Meets World sequel Girl Meets World as Charlie Gardner. Alongside the upcoming fourth season of Cobra Kai, he is next set to appear in Netflix's He's All That, a remake of the 1999 teen rom-com She's All That, which will see the young actor team up with TikTok star Addison Rae as she attempts to turn the least popular boy in school into the Prom King.

Speaking to CinemaBlend about his upcoming film, Buchanan was asked whether he would be interested in making the jump to the realm of superhero movies. The actor responded excitedly that he has "been a superhero fan [his] entire life" and added "I really want to play Robin to Robert Pattinson’s Batman". Buchanan even went so far as to pitch a plan for the character, claiming that he would want to "go on to play Nightwing". You can read Buchanan's full statement below:

"I’ve been a superhero fan my entire life. I’m a big comic guy, big superhero guy. Also, congratulations to Xolo, I did call him on the phone already, but congratulations to him because that’s fantastic, you know the Latinx community is getting to shine a little bit in that world that hopefully continues. But yeah, the one I’ve recently wanted to play is maybe not a superhero but a sidekick: Robin. I really want to play Robin to Robert Pattinson’s Batman. I’m very specific about what I want to do with that and then maybe go on to play Nightwing. I’ll go down a deep hole if I keep talking about superheroes, so I’ll leave it at that."

It's good to see Buchanan offer his congratulations and support to Maridueña as the pair of been working together since Cobra Kai began in 2018. Cobra Kai's arrival on Netflix has seen a significant rise in popularity for the show and greater exposure for the two actors. As exciting as it will be see Maridueña as Blue Beetle, it would be equally exciting to see Buchanan in the role of Robin. In many ways, the character journeys of Robby and Robin/Dick Grayson are not dissimilar, and with the actor excellently capturing the inner turmoil and angst of Robby in Cobra Kai, he would be an excellent fit for a Robin still reeling from the murder of his family.

Matt Reeves' The Batman is currently set for release in 2022, and there are currently two sequels and two spinoff shows on HBO Max planned. While there's no guarantee that Robin will make an appearance in any of these, it would make sense for him to arrive at some point. There are currently plans for a Nightwing film, but production is struggling to get off the ground with Warner Bros reportedly not considering it a priority. An appearance by Robin in a sequel to The Batman could be perfect way to set this up, and it would be hard not to see Buchanan as a viable candidate for the role especially considering his enthusiasm. Fans will just have to see what happens when The Batman arrives in 2022, but until then they can see more of Buchanan in Cobra Kai season 4 when it hits Netflix in December.
