A trailer for The Batman reveals a new look at the Riddler's costume. In the upcoming film from writer/director Matt Reeves, Paul Dano makes his DC debut as Edward Nashton, a serial killer who preys on Gotham's elite and taunts others with riddles. Dano is previously known for his villainous performances as the unholy preacher, Eli Sunday, in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood and the cruel slaveowner, John Tibeats, in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave. Now, Dano is set for an even bigger breakthrough in The Batman.

What was once conceived as a solo outing for Ben Affleck's Batman has now morphed into a standalone film set outside DC's Extended Universe. Robert Pattinson has been tapped to portray a younger version of Bruce Wayne in his second year of fighting crime and uncovering corruption in Gotham City. For The Batman, writers Reeves and Peter Craig took inspiration from Year One, The Long Halloween, Ego, and Zero Year comics storylines. The film's cast also includes Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffery Wright as Lieutenant James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as a secondary villain, the Penguin.

While The Batman's promotional campaign has purposefully been hiding much about Dano's villain, especially his face, there have been plenty of looks at how Reeves and company completely redesigned the Riddler's costume. To understand the classic depiction of the character, look no further than Jim Carrey's zany portrayal in Joel Schumacher's 1995 Batman Forever whose green costume was covered in question marks and featured outlandishly red hair. Dano's take is much more menacing, taking inspiration from the Zodiac Killer.

The Riddler's military surplus gear and his assault rifle are also in line with theory that the character has a military past. While some fans disapprove of and are even laughing at the Riddler's new costume, it's hard to deny it is a bold and different approach for the villain. Many fans weren't originally on board with Heath Ledger's Joker either, though they surely changed their tune once The Dark Knight was released. Dano's performance will likely have a similar effect when The Batman debuts on March 4.
