According to Peter Sarsgaard, his character in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, is a Gotham politician that lies a lot. In recent weeks, the character of Batman has seemingly been the talk of the town. Ben Affleck, who was previously slated to write, direct, and star in his own Batman film, opened up about his departure, which led to Reeves’ taking over and Robert Pattinson becoming Bruce Wayne. Also, the director of The Batman has shown off the Batsuit with an official video, and he even tweeted photos of the Batmobile. The team has been filming the reportedly noir-inspired Batman film in London, and along with Pattinson, the film also stars Colin Farrell as Penguin, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and Paul Dano as Riddler.

Also, as announced by Reeves in December, Sarsgaard, who previously appeared in DC’s Green Lantern in 2011, will be a part of the new tale of Gotham’s cape crusader. Reports initially suggested Sarsgaard could add to the impressive list of popular characters already in the film, by playing Harvey Dent aka Two-Face. The tweet announcing Sarsgaard had a gif with two faces, leading many fans to believe he will play the famous villain. Then, Warner Bros. released a cast list for The Batman, which confirmed Sarsgaard will not be playing Two-Face, but a new character named Gotham D.A. Gil Colson. However, now the actor has a little more information to share in regards to his character.

Sarsgaard recently made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where Stephen Colbert brought up his casting in the upcoming Batman film, and asked him about his “new character created for the movie,” and Sarsgaard said: “I’m a district attorney, and I’m basically a politician that has trouble telling the truth.” Colbert then discussed Sarsgaard’s wife Maggie Gyllenhaal’s appearance in The Dark Knight and asked whether there will be competition to see which character their kids like the most, and Sarsgaard claimed that his character is “a pretty distasteful person in it.”

Politicians are not often the heroes in the dark world of Gotham City, even Harvey Dent changes from good to bad in The Dark Knight, so it will not be surprising for fans to hear that his political character will have a dark side. Whether his character will have any kind of link to Harvey Dent is likely still a question on a lot of fans’ minds, and some may still be hoping this is some kind of secret, and Sarsgaard is playing Two-Face.

Although Sarsgaard has shed a little more light on what fans can expect from his character in Reeves’ film, there is still a great deal of mystery, and that is also the case with the film’s story. A lot of set photos have come out, but still, little is known about the actual plot for The Batman. However, as shooting continues and June 2021 becomes a little closer, Sarsgaard’s role and details on The Batman will likely become a lot clearer.
