Perhaps surprising some fans, Penguin actor Colin Farrell reveals he doesn't have a big role in The Batman. The upcoming movie is the DCEU's opportunity to reboot Bruce Wayne/Batman following Ben Affleck's performance. Affleck previously played the caped hero in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Neither film was well-received, leading DC to explore other options. In The Batman, Robert Pattinson will take over the title role, with Matt Reeves co-writing and directing. Many fans are excited to see what direction Reeves takes the DCEU in, especially with the star-studded cast he's assembled for the film.

In addition to Pattinson and Farrell, The Batman will star Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon. Up until this point, little has been known about Farrell's role in the movie. This is especially true since filming hadn't been going on for too long before it was shut down to the coronavirus. Even now, with the U.K. lifting filming restrictions, Warner Bros. hasn't restarted work on The Batman. In a recent interview, Farrell discussed both the shutdown and the size of his role in the movie.

Speaking with GMA News, Farrell revealed he "had only started" work on The Batman and "can't wait to get back." Even more notably, he said he doesn't have "that much to do" in the movie, which might come as a surprise to some fans. However, Farrell made it clear he's excited about the role of Oswald Cobbeplot/Penguin, mentioning "a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it," which should relieve fans:

I had only started it and I can’t wait to get back. The creation of it, the aesthetic of the character, has been fun and I really am so excited to get back and explore it. And I haven’t got that much to do. I have a certain amount in the film. I am not all over it by any means. But there are a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it and my creation and I can’t wait to get back. Yeah, I totally feel like it is something that I have not had the opportunity to explore before. It feels original and fun. But I am only at the start of the journey so I can’t wait to get back and really get into it.

Colin Farrell Penguin

Considering The Batman also features the noted villain Riddler, it makes sense Farrell would have a smaller part. It also explains why those involved in the movie have kept his role as secret as possible; if Farrell isn't in many scenes, it's only logical to keep the ones he's in a surprise. Even Penguin's look in the film remains a question. Set photos showed a silver-whited haired Farrell. However, he later denied that look for Penguin, saying he hadn't begun filming yet. Recent news suggested Farrell may wear prosthetics for the role, though fans likely won't know this for sure, or what they look like, until filming on The Batman resumes.

Unfortunately, DC fans will also have to wait longer than expected for The Batman, as it was delayed four months to October 2021. However, when it does come out, hopefully they'll be satisfied with the size of Farrell's role in the movie. At the very least, it sounds like they can look forward to a couple of key scenes for Penguin.
