Colin Farrell's Penguin gets a comics accurate makeover - complete with a top hat and monocle - in this piece of The Batman fan art. The Batman is easily one of the most anticipated DC movies, but it has hit a few major speed bumps on its road to the big screen. Production began earlier this year, but it was soon suspended in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. After months of waiting on standby, filming finally started up again recently, only to get shut down once more when star Robert Pattinson tested positive for the virus. For the time being, The Batman will remain on hold while Pattinson recovers.

Despite only filming about 25% of the film earlier this year, director Matt Reeves was still able to compile a teaser trailer for The Batman, which he debuted a few weeks ago at DC FanDome. The Batman's first bit of footage set the internet on fire as fans expressed their excitement for what's to come. One of the more intriguing aspects of the trailer was the first glimpse of Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot, or the Penguin. Farrell was completely unrecognizable thanks to his prosthetics; many fans actually didn't realize it was him during the first viewing.

Since The Batman's Penguin is quite different from past iterations, fan artist Christ Ave decided to give Farrell's appearance a bit of an update. Clearly drawing from the comics, this piece gives the Penguin his signature top hat as well as a monocle. Had the Penguin been dressed like this in the trailer, fans definitely would've recognized him immediately.

At DC FanDome, Reeves said The Batman's Penguin isn't yet the mob boss fans know best and that he doesn't like being called the Penguin. This explains why Oswald doesn't look the way many fans are expecting; perhaps the top hat will arrive later. The Batman is said to feature the origins of several well-known Batman villains, including the Riddler (Paul Dano). He too was glimpsed in The Batman trailer.

The Batman takes place within Bruce Wayne's second year as the iconic hero, so while it isn't an origin story for him, it's definitely the start of something new for several characters. The Riddler is poised to be the man villain for The Batman, leaving the Penguin's role to still be a mystery. While his arc is almost certain to lead to his place as a famed Gotham mobster, fans will have to wait and see where he starts off. It's safe to say that might be one of the questions they're most looking forward to answering.
