As The Batman casting announcements and rumors continue, one fan artist has imagined what Andy Serkis might look like as Alfred Pennyworth. In the comics, Alfred is the loyal British butler of Bruce Wayne/Batman and becomes a father figure to the young orphan after his parents die. Alfred is also ex-British Intelligence, and many esteemed British actors have taken on the role over the years. These include Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons. Caine played Alfred for Christopher Nolan's critically beloved The Dark Knight trilogy, while Irons played the role more recently for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017's Justice League. Meanwhile, news broke earlier this week that Serkis is in talks to play Alfred Pennyworth.
The Batman will feature Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman with Matt Reeves directing. Though Serkis is the latest performer rumored to join the film, a slew of casting announcements have been made in the last month. Big Little Lies' Zoë Kravitz will suit up as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, earning her congratulations from stepdad Jason Momoa. Paul Dano will play The Riddler, a role that almost went to Jonah Hill, though ultimately no casting came to fruition. Hill was also in contention for Penguin before talks broke down. As of this week, Colin Farrell is in consideration for that part.
Artist Bosslogic took to Instagram to share his interpretation of what Serkis may look like as Alfred. His take is decidedly dark, with blood spattering Alfred's butler uniform. The artist frequently imagines what actors may look like in different roles and also tackled Farrell as Penguin after the reveal that he was in talks for the role. Check out Bosslogic's image of Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth below:
The Batman is right in Serkis' wheelhouse, as he's appeared in many comic book movies and franchise films over the years. He's already played a role in the MCU, taking on villain Ulysses Klaue in both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther. Serkis is famous for his motion capture acting as well, having done so as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings films. He likely won't need to tap into that particular skill as Alfred. Serkis has played a role in an impressive number of blockbuster films throughout his career, having also featured in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
Though no one knows yet exactly what Serkis will look like as Alfred, Bosslogic's take may not be that far off. The tuxedo Alfred wears in the picture is pretty similar to his look in the comics. Plus, the character has killed before, meaning that the blood and serious stare are in line with what he's capable of doing. Even if Serkis' version of Alfred doesn't look exactly like this once The Batman hits theaters in a couple of years, fans should be excited to get a glimpse at what may be ahead.
