Andy Serkis says he joined The Batman to work with director Matt Reeves. DCEU's most hotly anticipated film, The Batman is a standalone movie set on "Earth-2". Originally, The Batman was conceived as a solo outing for Ben Affleck, who was also attached to direct, produce, and write the film. But after Affleck dropped out, Cloverfield director Matt Reeves took over at the helm, and he repurposed the movie entirely. The Batman isn't an origin story, although it does focus on the early years in Bruce Wayne's career as a vigilante. Reeves' film features Twilight alum Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, and it's scheduled to release on March 4, 2022.
Among the many reasons that have stirred up excitement for the film, The Batman's starry ensemble is perhaps the most notable. The movie features an array of fan-favorite characters from the DC Comics lore, with villains and heroes all portrayed by top Hollywood actors. Paul Dano is playing The Riddler, presumably the movie's main antagonist, while Colin Farrell is set to appear as Penguin, an HBO Max series for whom has also been ordered. There is Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/ Catwoman, while Jeffery Wright is essaying the Gotham City Police Department Commissioner, Jim Gordon. Venom: Let there be Carnage helmer Andy Serkis is also attached to the cast; he plays Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's mentor and butler.
Recently Serkis talked about his decision to join The Batman with Uproxx. The actor-director explained he boarded the movie because he wanted to work with director Matt Reeves, whom he had collaborated with before for two Planets of the Apes movies, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). Serkis didn't go into detail about his role due to his non-disclosure agreement, although he still expressed excitement about being a part of the DC superhero film. Read what he said below.

As expressed during a recent exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Andy Serkis is quite confident about Reeves' vision for The Batman and the film's success. The actor is sure that the film is going to be "pretty amazing" and that it will feel quite "special." Serkis' hopes for The Batman, are after all, not unwarranted, as the project is clearly shaping up to be a very unique and exciting tale about the iconic Dark Knight. The story explores the detective side of Bruce Wayne and includes elements of a psychological thriller. Additionally, Gotham City in the movie is also unlike all other Gothams; it's more realistic with a lot of relevance to the contemporary world.
Serkis' confidence in Reeves' work and the quality of The Batman has, for sure, increased the anticipation for the film. Although the movie is next in DCEU's upcoming features slate, there is very little known about the plot and story. In fact, there hasn't been a single look at Serkis' Alfred so far, as the character wasn't introduced in The Batman's first trailer. That could soon all change as the movie will unveil new footage at the upcoming DC FanDome on October 16, 2021. Hopefully, the trailer will expand a bit more on what Reeves wants to achieve with the movie while seconding Serkis' claims about The Batman's superior caliber, grand scale, and intriguing narrative.
