Production is underway on The Batman, with leaked set photos offering the first look at Colin Farrell as Penguin. The Caped Crusader is about to get a face-change in the DC Extended Universe (as it's unofficially known), with Robert Pattinson taking over from Ben Affleck after his appearances in Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. Affleck, of course, was slated to co-write, direct, and star in The Batman solo movie early on in its development. Instead, the acclaimed Cloverfield and Planet of the Apes filmmaker Matt Reeves is calling the shots on the project from his own script.

Although it doesn't hit theaters until late June 2021, filming on The Batman has already gotten underway, as Jeffery Wright (who's taking over from Justice League's J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Jim Gordon in the DCEU) confirmed via social media over the weekend. As a result, photos from the movie's set have already begun to make their way online - including, some of Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot aka. Penguin, one of several Batman baddies confirmed for the film.

Twitter user Wade Gravett has posted several photos from The Batman set to their account, as you can see below.  And while they don't reveal a whole lot, they do offer the very first glimpse of Farrell in the film. Some fans are also speculating that's Pattinson as the mystery motorbike rider pictured here.

In addition to several Gotham police officers and a news van, these photos appear to show a silver-haired Farrell as the Penguin holding his preferred weapon of choice, an umbrella, in his hand. This isn't the first time the actor's gone silver for a film role either, and he had a similar look as Percival Graves (aka. Gellert Grindelwald in disguise) in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. By the character's standards, Farrell's rendition is fairly plain-looking and lacks the flamboyant elements (like the large top hat) associated with previous versions of the character in not only DC comic books and animation, but also live-action (see Danny DeVito's portrayal from Batman Returns). If you didn't know any better, you might think he was just an ordinary wealthy member of Gotham City, surveying what appears to be the aftermath of another crime on Batman's all too dangerous home turf.

It makes sense, though; Reeves has indicated The Batman will essentially be a noir crime drama that plays up Bruce Wayne's skills as a detective, so it's only fitting that Farrell's Penguin be a little more grounded in appearance (but with a sense of style that still shows off his wealth, of course). That's expected to be the case with most of the rogues in Reeves' film too, including John Turturro as the crime boss Carmine Falcone, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle aka. Catwoman, and Paul Dano as The Riddler. And with Farrell playing the role, The Batman's rendition of Penguin should exude a real sense of menace, making him much more quietly threatening than previous live-action iterations.
