The Batman director Matt Reeves is rumored to have someone in mind for the role of Bruce Wayne if Ben Affleck departs the project. Warner Bros' DC Films universe is poised to expand when Justice League hits theaters this week, which is arguably the culmination of the shared superhero world thus far. Zack Snyder launched the DC Comics-inspired universe with Man of Steel, which was followed by the highly anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The 2016 entry officially kickstarted the universe by bringing Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman together on screen for the first time in live-action.
Given the anticipation for Batman V Superman, the announcements of who would play Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince were big deals to fans. While many were unenthused by Ben Affleck being cast as Batman, the actor won over a significant number of fans through his performance in Snyder's film. However, in the run up to Affleck returning as the Dark Knight in Justice League, there has been a great deal of speculation about whether he'll continue to portray Batman in the DC Films universe. The actor was originally set to write, direct, and star in the Batman solo movie, but Affleck has since stepped down as writer and director, with Matt Reeves stepping in to take the helm. With continuing speculation that Affleck will leave The Batman, a new rumor indicates Reeves has a plan for that contingency.
John Campea, who first reported Affleck is looking to leave the Batman role, shared a new rumor on his YouTube series, The John Campea Show. In the video, he reveals Reeves has an actor in mind to potentially replace Affleck, if the Justice League star chooses to depart the project. Campea said:
I'm hesitant to say anything, but I talked to a Hollywood producer yesterday who told me who Matt Reeves wants as Batman. And, I’ll be honest with you, the name they [gave] me caught me a little bit by surprise. I called somebody else later in the day, saying, ‘Hey, I heard this, is there any validity to this?' And they said, ‘Well, Matt does want him.' But, that doesn't mean it's going to happen. There's been no movement or anything like that. It doesn’t mean anything’s going to happen.
Of course, this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt since Campea's two sources are unnamed members of Hollywood and it's impossible to discern how much validity this rumor may have. Campea went on to say that he was hesitant to share the rumor because of the backlash that met his previous report. Further, as he said, he does know the name of the actor Reeves has in mind, and may reveal who this performer is over the next few days. But, as Campea additionally points out, nothing may come of Reeves having a potential replacement in mind if Affleck chooses not to depart The Batman.
Throughout the Justice League press tour, Affleck has been asked numerous times about his future in the cape and cowl. At Comic-Con International in San Diego Affleck said he'll play Batman as long as DC wants, but his brother, Casey Affleck, stirred the pot shortly after that by saying he doesn't think Ben will star in The Batman - though the younger Affleck has since walked back his statement, saying it was a joke. More recently, Affleck has seemed unsure of his Batman future, and said in an interview he's "contemplating ... a graceful and cool way to segue out" of the role.
With all that said, the official line from everyone involved with The Batman and the DC Films universe is that Affleck is dedicated to playing Bruce Wayne for the foreseeable future. With The Batman aiming to film next year according to reports, we may soon learn more about what to expect from Reeves' superhero film and Affleck's involvement in it. But, until we receive official word from the director or studio, fans can speculate away about who Reeves may have in mind to star in The Batman if Affleck decides to leave.
