In Avengers: Age of Ultron, a frustrated Tony Stark lets a simple curse word slip and his interconnected teammate Captain America immediately reminds him to watch his language. This simple slip became an ongoing joke throughout the film and online pop culture was prepared to add it to the ever-growing library of Internet memes. It would appear that the joke has found a second life in DC Comics where the ever vigilant Batman can't resist telling one of his foes to watch their potty mouth.

In Age of Ultron, while the Avengers raid Baron Von Strucker's Hydra base, Tony can't let Cap's " Language!" slip, because he's the kind of person that Steve Rogers know wouldn't let something that old fashioned and ridiculous go. At the Avengers party at Stark Tower, it is shown that not only is the team aware but they aren't gonna let Steve forget his mini-disciplinarian moment either. Near the end of the film when reinforcements arrive to assist the exhausted Avengers against Ultron's forces, Cap can't help but curse (out of respect) to which Nick Fury calls him out, showing that even Fury is in on the joke. This kind of boomerang humor, jokes that are referenced early and then again later in the film or later films, is prevalent in a nice majority of the MCU  and thanks to the Internet, this joke has remained in the backyard of pop culture consciousness since 2015.

In Batman #92 written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Guillem March, Batman's current battle with Deathstroke is interrupted by the Riddler's latest entrance. Ever the dramatic one, Nygma broadcasts his face all over Gotham's screens where he challenges Batman to his usual gauntlet of riddles or else he will detonate bombs he scattered throughout the city. As always, Batman is not in the mood for Riddler's tomfoolery and with a handcuffed Deathstroke at his side, he blows through Nygma's riddles with the intellectual villain getting more and more frustrated with every correct answer. Eventually he looses his cool and curses while smashing stuff before his live Gotham audience. He doesn't get a hefty FCC fine but Batman can't help playfully remind Eddie to watch his language especially if there are children presently watching.

Writer James Tynion clearly has been enjoying his run on Batman and that enthusiasm shows in his ability to balance two overlapping plots while also finding time for small character moments or lines that would make anyone abruptly laugh while reading. Although Batman has been having a rough time during a tumultuous year already, Tynion can't help but show a sense of humor underneath all of that focus and dark demeanor. To add to the moment, you have his captive Deathstroke who is along for the ride adding to the hilarity of the moment by suggesting these hijinks would make for an excellent television game show. These tongue in cheek moments add necessary humor to an all-around grim situation and yet they don't feel about of character at all.

In the end, if anybody would be policing bad language, it would be no surprise that Batman would have an opinion about it, even if other interpretations of the Dark Knight have had different opinions about its use.  Although his colleague from Smallville seems like a more likely candidate to enforce those good ol' fashioned values, other series have shown that Captain America and Batman have more in common than even their creators could have imagined. Although it's just one moment in already packed issue, it's hard now not to imagine any iteration of Batman telling members of his Bat Family or Justice League to watch their language in that distinct Batman tone.

As the Batman series edges closer to the upcoming Joker War, one can hope Riddler will think twice about letting any curse words slip in the future. C'mon Eddie, you kiss your mother with that mouth?
