New fan art imagines what Lakeith Stanfield would look like as the Joker in the upcoming DC film The Batman. At this current moment, The Batman is arguably the most anticipated DC movie among fans due to its brand new star. Robert Pattinson will be the latest actor to take over the role of Bruce Wayne, and many are curious to see how the former Twilight star will fare. Additionally, the teases provided by director Matt Reeves about The Batman's plot and themes have piqued fans' interests, such as the reveal that it is not another origin story. Pattinson is joined by a formidable cast made up of actors such as Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Peter Sarsgaard, and John Turturro.

That hefty supporting cast will be playing several well-known figures from Batman comics, including Catwoman (Kravitz) and the Penguin (Farrell). However, Batman's greatest adversary, the Joker, hasn't yet been included in the film. There have been rumors that the Joker will in fact appear in The Batman, or that he could even have a role in a potential sequel. As of this time, however, Reeves hasn't confirmed anything. That hasn't stopped fans from dreaming up their ideal picks for the Joker, with actors like Bill Skarsgård and Stanfield being popular choices.

Stanfield has actually been open about his interest in playing the Joker someday, which is one of the reasons why fans are so intrigued by the idea of his casting. Stanfield was most recently seen in films like Uncut Gems and Knives Outthough his breakout role came in the FX series AtlantaGraphic artist ApexForm decided to imagine how Stanfield would look as the Joker in this new piece. You can see it in the space below and decide how he stacks up compared to other live-action Jokers.

The Joker is something of a complicated character for future DC films. While last year's Joker was completely separate from the DC Extended Universe, fans have become quite attached to Joaquin Phoenix's iteration of the character. A Joker 2 may or may not be happening, but even if it does, some are still clamoring for a new Joker to appear within the DCEU. That universe already had a Joker with Jared Leto, but as his performance wasn't well-received, the door is wide open to recast the part.

It isn't clear if The Batman will take place within the DCEU, so even if someone like Stanfield is cast as the Joker for that movie, it might not be DCEU canon. Because of the number of onscreen Jokers there have been in recent years, there's also an argument to be made that the Joker doesn't need to be revived yet again. On the other hand, it would feel strange to have a Batman that doesn't come in contact with the Clown Prince of Crime. At the very least, fans should probably expect The Batman to reference the villain. Whether or not he will be introduced remains to be seen.
