DC has just announced the upcoming comics which will make up its horror-themed Knight Terrors event, as its entire universe gets a gory, horrifying makeover. A new villain named Insomnia is plunging DC into the Nightmare Realm, confronting every hero and villain with their greatest fears.

The event kicks off with Knight Terrors: First Blood #1 from Joshua Williamson and Howard Porter. Available July 4, Howard Porter's art for the main cover (as well as a 1:666 signed variant and a Darkest Hour variant) shows Insomnia looming over the heroes, with DC's summary introducing this twisted new foe:

When Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman find the body of one of their earliest enemies inside the Hall of Justice, their investigation takes them past the land of the living, beyond the land of the dead, and directly to a new villain called Insomnia, who uses his powers to engulf every single hero and villain in their own dark and twisted nightmares. The only way to save the world is to call for the help of an unlikely hero - Deadman!

Knight Terrors Drops Every DC Character into a Personal Nightmare

The issue's variant cover art shows various DC icons dealing with truly horrifying fates, from Harley Quinn being consumed by spiders in Riccardo Federici's 1:25 cover to Zatanna transforming into an eldritch monstrosity in Francesco Mattina's open-to-order variant. Superman's new demonic opposite encircles Clark and Lois Lane on Ejikure's 1:50 variant, while Batman and Deadman merge in Jae Lee's open-to-order variant. DC also shared four uncolored pages of the issue to whet fans' appetites for the slaughter ahead.

Deadman Is the Unlikely Champion of Knight Terrors

The art shows the ghostly detective Deadman sensing the coming threat of Insomnia, setting up Boston Brand as fans' guide through the four-issue main series, with Knight Terrors #1 coming July 11. The event will also include a host of two-issue villain miniseries, exposing the worst fears of Joker, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Punchline, Poison Ivy, and Black Adam, as well as the mysterious Angel Breaker's role in the adventure.

DC is no stranger to dark stories, but the art for Knight Terrors: First Blood makes it clear that its heroes and villains will be facing some truly horrifying fates that are literally the stuff of nightmare. With Batman and Deadman on the case, fans can look forward to a spine-chilling event which will also plumb the psychological depths of some fan-favorite characters. DC has promised more Knight Terrors news tomorrow, and Screen Rant will continue reporting on the upcoming villain miniseries and main series, uncovering the specific nightmares each DC hero and villain will face when Insomnia strikes this July.
