DC's flagship Batman series is about to go into overdrive. Writer James Tynion IV may have only been on the series for a few issues but already he is gearing up for something big. This May's Batman #95 will mark the beginning of "Joker War," a story described as the final chapter in the story between the Dark Knight and the Clown Prince of Crime!

The first issue of "Joker War" will be written by Tynion with art by Jorge Jimenez. It is uncertain yet whether Jimenez will be doing all of the art for the story or if others will be splitting duties. Tony S. Daniel and Guillem March have both taken on art duties for the series since Tynion took over with Batman #86. While specific plot details of "Joker War" are not yet known, the two-page tease in Batman #85 set the stakes by confirming Joker knows the identities of the Batman family... and may finally put that knowledge to use.

Now that the official solicitation for Batman #95 has arrived, fans can get a clearer picture of the events about to unfold. Prior to "Joker War" beginning, Tynion has already been making waves with the series. With the upcoming Batman #89 and Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3, a significant new character is being introduced into Batman's world -- one who may play a pivotal role in "Joker War." That character is reported to be Joker's new girlfriend, Punchline. Both issues debuting Punchline have already gone into both issues of Punchline's debut have earned second printings, making it clear fans are clamoring to find out more about Joker's new gal.

It should be no surprise at all that a story purporting to be "the final battle" between Batman and Joker are getting people excited. The historical rivalry between the two characters is not only one of greatest in all of comics (if not the greatest), but it likely holds a high place across all mediums of storytelling. And at this moment in Bruce's story the stakes couldn't be higher. Tom King's run on Batman put Bruce through the ringer physically, emotionally, and psychologically. And at the same time, has lost key members of his Bat-family. All signs point to Batman having to fight this one on his own, before the end.
