DC Comics has announced a new Black Label series titled Batman: The Imposter. The new Batman series promises to be a grounded and gritty take on the character, in a realistic way that has never been done before. It will follow Batman as he begins his war on crime in Gotham City. However, things aren't going to be easy for the Dark Knight as this series promises to bring severe consequences to every action taken. Every punch will leave broken bones and gunshots will actually hit.

Batman: The Imposter is being released via DC Black Label, meaning that the series will be allowed to go as dark as it wants. It's being written by director and screenwriter Mattson Tomlin (Project Power) with art by Eisner-winning artist Andrea Sorrentino (Joker: Killer Smile). Their spin on Gotham is promised to be gritty and hard-boiled, holding nothing back when it comes to showing the true darkness of Batman's crime-fighting days.

Along with DC Comics' announcement, they have released some preview pages and the cover art for Batman: The Imposter. It features Bruce Wayne having only operated as Batman for about a year, meaning that he isn't super experienced. What happens in the series will be a huge learning curve for Batman as he marches forward into the future. By this point, Batman has already made many dangerous enemies as Gotham's most powerful resent Batman's crusade against crime. One specific villain has a plan for taking care of the Batman problem and it seems it could be fatal. Check out the preview pages and the two cover arts below:

  • Batman: The Imposter #1
  • Written by MATTSON TOMLIN
  • Art and main cover by ANDREA SORRENTINO
  • Colors by JORDIE BELLAIRE
  • Variant cover by LEE BERMEJO
  • 1-in-25 “ratio” variant cover by KAARE ANDREWS
  • Bruce Wayne’s mission as the Batman has only been under way for a year or so, but he can tell he’s making a difference. Unfortunately, he’s made some powerful enemies. All the traditional power brokers of Gotham resent the disruption the Batman has brought to town…and it seems one of them has a plan to neutralize him. There’s a second Batman haunting Gotham’s rooftops and alleys—and this one has no qualms about murdering criminals, live and on tape.
  • With the entire might of the Gotham City Police Department and Gotham’s rich and powerful coming down on his head, Batman must find this imposter and somehow clear his name…but how can you prove your innocence from behind a mask?

This new villain will be masquerading as Batman, framing him for his brutal crimes. Batman will have to clear his name, but how can he do that while wearing a mask that hides his identity? This is one of the many tough questions that Batman will be struggling with in this three-issue prestige format series. Not only are they going around killing Batman's enemies and presumably innocents, but they do it all while recording themselves on tape. It seems that the preview pages show the aftermath of Batman's latest encounter with one of Gotham's criminals, could it be the mystery imposter? Batman is seen bleeding to death as he scrambles for help.

Batman: The Imposter will be one of the Caped Crusader's darkest stories as he tries to survive the brutal blows of Gotham's criminals. It's exciting to see how dark they are going and the preview pages already highlight the severity of what will be seen. This will be a series to not miss for all Batman fans. Especially, because of the mystery surrounding the fake imposter Batman. Fans will question the true identity of the Batman killer who haunts Gotham City. Batman: The Imposter #1 will debut in comic book stores and on digital platforms on October 12.
