The signature Batman Hellbat armor is specifically designed to give him a puncher’s chance against even the most overpowered supervillains, but is this technology enough to take on the full might of Marvel Comics’ Thor? The Asgardian God of Thunder may get a serious sense of déjà vu in fighting a Bruce Wayne who is suited up with the Hellbat armor, but he would be wise not to consider him an Iron Man clone. This suit is one of DC Comics' best-weaponized suits and the Caped Crusader uses its many strategic upgrades to perfection.

Unlike most batsuits, which are designed exclusively by Wayne, Batman’s friends in the Justice League played a central role in crafting this armor, knowing that the World’s Greatest Detective’s wits aren’t always enough to match more overpowered foes. Given that Darkseid challenges Batman fairly often, this suit is equipped with many abilities beyond its notably increased strength level. It has a cape that transforms into wings, the technology to turn invisible on a whim, and a blaster in its chest insignia. This is in addition to nano kinetic metallic components that form whatever shapes are needed for timely slashing or shielding. One of Batman’s chief opportunities to demonstrate the power of the Hellbat armor did indeed come in an epic battle against Darkseid, occurring in Batman and Robin #37 by Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, and Mick Gray. Not only did Wayne withstand the New God’s blows, but he absorbed omega beams to funnel them back at his assailant through the Hellbat armor’s chest cannon, which is even more impressive than Superman’s ability to dodge Darkseid’s signature attack.

As a god of thunder, Thor controls lightning and other energy types, wielding godlike powers that are similar to Darkseid’s, including superhuman strength and endurance. This means that Batman has fought a similar foe in his Hellbat armor the same way Thor has fought a similarly armored foe in Iron Man. Thor’s powerset is further amplified by Mjolnir, his iconic magical hammer that strikes blows powerful enough to break even Celestial-crafted armors, as seen in Thor #388 by Tom DeFalco, Ron Frenz, and Brett Breeding. If Thor can crack a Celestial’s armor with his mightiest blow, the Hellbat armor would likely not fare so well if he managed to land a hit with similar force, much like how Iron Man’s armor was recently shattered by Mjolnir.

Since Batman’s Hellbat armor is not too different than what Thor has encountered when fighting Iron Man, there is no element of surprise and the God of Thunder can employ many of the same techniques he'd use against Stark. Furthermore, Bruce Wayne is disadvantaged in a way that Tony isn't since the Hellbat suit runs on his metabolism, a finite resource that could kill him if it’s exhausted. Given that Thor strong-armed Hulk to a standstill in Defenders #10 by Sal Buscema and Steve Englehart, the God of Thunder’s endurance is a big advantage here. Any kind of stalemate in this battle would burn Batman’s reserves, with the Hellbat suit doing irreparable harm to its wearer.

Though the Hellbat armor has given Batman a serious upgrade, it merely brings him to the same power level that foes like Thor and Darkseid are at naturally. And it comes at a cost, seeing how Batman uses technology that harms him just to use it. For Bruce Wayne to have any chance of besting Thor he needs to address the suit’s critical weakness. As awesome as the Hellbat armor is, its siphoning of Batman’s metabolism would make it a ticking timebomb in the type of prolonged fights that Thor is famous for, giving Bruce Wayne no chance of winning this battle.
