HBO Max's The Batman prequel series based around the Gotham PD will be set during Year One of Robert Pattinson's Batman. Even though Matt Reeves' reboot of the Dark Knight won't be in theaters until next year, excitement for the movie is already mounting. The first trailer for The Batman has been released and shows how the film will introduce audiences to the new take on Batman. With multiple villains and crime spreading throughout Gotham, the movie is quickly building the Batman-centric world.

The Batman might not be in theaters yet, but plans are already in motion for Reeves to expand the universe. It was recently announced that he is developing a Gotham PD series for HBO Max set in the same continuity as The Batman. The show is being written by Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire) and was previously reported to be set before the movie. But, it was not clear exactly when the HBO Max original will take place in relation to The Batman following Year Two of Bruce's vigilante missions.

As part of DC FanDome, Reeves appeared to hold a panel for The Batman, which concluded with the release of the first trailer. Before the footage debuted online, Reeves answered multiple questions about the movie and the Gotham PD show. This portion of the panel came with the reveal that the untitled Gotham PD show for HBO Max will be set very close to The Batman's events, as it will take place during Year One.

Reeves's confirmation of when the Gotham PD show will take place is intriguing, especially since it should be released after The Batman hits theaters. It was previously reported that the show will focus on examining the corrupt state of Gotham, which Reeves highlighted as a major element of the movie itself. He mentioned that the series will see the cops and the general public first hearing whispers of a masked crimefighter in their city, which could then set up how Batman and the GCPD work together in The Batman, as shown in the trailer.

Even with these added details on the Gotham show, there is still a lot that is not known. Reeves mentioned that brand new characters will be featured in the series, but also teased the possibility of some familiar faces returning. It would be quite strange if a Gotham show happened as a prequel to The Batman and Jeffrey Wright's Jim Gordon doesn't appear. The same could even be true for Pattinson's Batman if he is still coming onto the scene during this time. But, since we don't even know when the show will be released, details like these might not arrive for a while.
