With the DC Animated Universe preparing for the release of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight in 2018, a new clip from the movie shows Batman favorite Poison Ivy in trouble as she meets Jack the Ripper.
Adapting the acclaimed 1989 graphic novel by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, Gotham by Gaslight will be the thirtieth DC Universe Animated Original movie, but only the third to be rated R. Following the grim Victorian streets of an Elseworlds Gotham City, the Caped Crusader is tasked with solving a set of grisly murders with a nod to the real-life cases of Jack the Ripper.
While Ivy is only referred to "Pamela the Plant Lady," in the movie, she is the Gaslight version of the famous Dark Knight rogue with a penchant for plant life. Not to spoil the film for you, but by the looks of the clip, Ivy will be lucky to survive her brush with the Ripper - who may or may not also be a familiar face from the depths of Batman lore. Sadly, 19th Century Bruce Wayne doesn't appear in the clip, but don't worry, he will have plenty of screen time during the full movie when trying to catch the infamous serial killer.
Either way, Gotham by Gaslight promises to live up to its R rating and bring the one-shot graphic novel to our screens for the first time with a splash of red. While the DCEU has often struggled under the criticism of being too dark, the animated features have tended to do much better when it comes to handling Batman's particularly dark source material. A live-action Gotham by Gaslight may have been a novel idea at some point, but it seems to be a much better idea in animated form.
However, remembering the lukewarm reception to 2016's Batman: The Killing Joke, let's hope that one of the darkest Dark Knight tales can do a little better with the critics. Given that Ivy didn't feature in the original Gotham by Gaslight, an already dramatic move away from what Augustyn and Mignola had intended may rub some fans up the wrong way.
We will just have to trust that James Krieg's updated screenplay and Sam Liu's directorial skills can give Gaslight the justice that it deserves. Who knows, if Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is a hit, could it be the start more amazing Elseworlds hits could come flying out of the Batcave?
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight releases digitally on Jan. 23, 2018. The movie will release on Blu-Ray and DVD on Feb. 6, 2018.
