Batman's lost almost everything, but a new challenger is taking away what truly matters most to him. Bruce Wayne has no Alfred, no Robin, and no billions after the back to back crisis events City of Bane and Joker War. Before Batman can even struggle to put his life back together, he has to stop a new enemy named Ghost-Maker from stealing his position as the hero of Gotham. The battle begins in November's Batman #103.

Batman #103 is written by James Tynion IV (Batman Eternal) with art by Carlo Pagulayan (Deathstroke) and Danny Miki (Superman: For Tomorrow) and cover art by Jorge Jiminez. Tynion's apocalyptic Joker War storyline ended in issue 100; Batman defeated the Joker in the end, but the battle took a huge toll on the Dark Knight and the people around him. Batman no longer has the billions to fund his operation, Catwoman is hiding from the heat after betraying Gotham's underworld to help Bruce, and worst of all, Batman has lost the city's trust. The Joker may have lost the battle, but even Batman had to admit the Joker was right. The Dark Knight has failed to protect Gotham's citizens from people like him time and time again, and they're beginning to sympathize with radicals like Clownhunter and malicious grifters like Punchline more than with the Bat-Family.

DC Comics' solicitation for Batman #103 reveals a new character who's stepping in to the wreckage of Batman's life. Ghost-Maker, as he calls himself, is another costumed vigilante who trained alongside Batman. Ghost-Maker first appeared in the epilogue of Batman #100, where he resolved to give Gotham's citizens an alternative to Batman's failed methods. In issue 103's unlettered preview, the fight kicks off immediately as Ghost-Maker forces a meditating Bruce to prove himself. Clownhunter watches, then has a fight of his own, hunting down former Joker second fiddle Harley Quinn. Check out some of the preview images below:

The odds are stacked against Batman as this fight kicks off. Ghost-Maker has Batman's education, resources that outdo Bruce's devastated bank account, and a sales pitch an embittered Gotham is likely to buy into. If Batman's going to win this one, he'll have to find something that drives him that Ghost-Maker doesn't have... for example, a family of superheroes that supports him in hard times. The preview features Barbara Gordon, who's switched over from Batgirl to Oracle, helping him out. So it also might be time for Batman to mend bridges with his estranged son Robin.

On the other hand, Batman might genuinely lose this one. Readers are aware at this point that DC is a few months away from a future where Bruce has abandoned the Batman name and Gotham has been taken over by an oppressive new villain. As bad as things are for Batman now, fans know they're only getting worse.
