It seems that a new Batman video game might finally be unveiled at DC’s upcoming FanDome event in August. Word of a new title featuring the Dark Knight has been widespread over the past couple of years, with the popular rumor being that it was originally planned to be revealed at E3 2020 before COVID-19 forced the annual event's cancelation.

Accounts of what this new Batman title will be about have varied. Batman Arkham Origins developer Warner Bros. Montreal has been hinting that they are working on a reboot of the Batman Arkham series that would pit the Caped Crusader against such villains as Ra's al Ghul and the Court Of Owls. Elsewhere, a leaked image from just before the highly successful PlayStation 5 reveal earlier this month hinted that the game would instead draw influence from the Batman Beyond cartoon of the early 2000s, if not serving as a reimagining of that future storyline. So far, nothing concrete has been confirmed, but rumors have been plentiful enough to convince fans that there is a new game on the horizon, and it is going to be officially announced soon.

A recent article by Bloomberg, while primarily dealing with the continued fallout of Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s divisive remarks about the transgender community on social media a few weeks ago, makes a brief mention of the newest Batman video game in its last paragraph. In passing, it's mentioned that parent company Warner Bros. is planning to reveal this new title at the upcoming DC FanDome event in August, although it's noted that this may change in light of the aforementioned JK Rowling controversy.

Batman in Arkham Games

In the meantime, original Batman Arkham developer Rocksteady is supposedly working on a new DC game centered around the Suicide Squad, which is also set to be unveiled at the DC FanDome event, and it's unclear if those two titles are completely separate or one and the same. Hosted by Warner Bros, this virtual showcase is expected to serve as an outlet for several other DC Comics-based reveals, such as the second season of the hit DC Universe series Doom Patrol and highly anticipated movies like Matt Reeves’s The Batman.

But for video game fans, the prospect of a new Batman game is the most exciting part of the event, especially given the high quality and massive success of the previous Batman Arkham titles. It has been five years since Rocksteady seemingly ended their series with 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight, meaning that these fans will surely be ready to suit up as the Dark Knight once again soon as they cast their eyes on the DC FanDome event.
