Warning: spoilers ahead for Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1!

Batman is fully aware he is fighting inside Fortnite. The newest crossover from DC Comics, Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1, has resulted in the Dark Knight being taken far from his home. Instead of Gotham City, he is in a video game and he's aware that something is off about his surroundings.

The Dark Knight has had his fair share of crossovers, but his newest is definitely one of the most interesting. Video games have delved into comics before, including ones from DC. Batman: Arkham Knight and Injustice: Gods Among Us were both adapted into comics. Most of the time, major superheroes are not dropped into the world of video games though. That is exactly what this comic series is doing.

Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1, created by Donald Mustard, Christos Gage, Reilly Brown, Nelson Faro DeCastro, and John Kalisz, throws Batman right into the middle of a video game that isn't his own. That may seem a bit crazy, but it isn't crazier to anyone than Batman. Despite not having complete memory of who he is, the Dark Knight is still aware that he is in a video game - and so far, he isn't a fan of that.

Within the comic, Batman reflects on not knowing his name, not being able to speak, but still having his training and knowing how to fight. He hasn't lost any of his skills, but he recognizes early on that things aren't quite right. Batman has enough awareness of himself and what his normal is to know that he is somewhere he doesn't want to be. While fighting is clearly what he knows how to do best, being manipulated is something he absolutely hates. Batman has skilled opponents, but not being in control is something he'd prefer to avoid. The Dark Knight knows someone else is pulling all his strings, forcing him to do things.

Furthermore, Batman knows that standard logic doesn't apply to his surroundings. There is no rhyme or reason to what he's doing, but given his experience with Arkham Asylum, he knows it isn't an asylum or a prison. This level of awareness adds a new depth to this comic. It would have been relatively easy to just drop Batman into a battle royale in a one-off story for Fortnite. The writers could have created a tournament where he fights against popular Fortnite characters or applied the setup of Fortnite to Gotham and its iconic characters. Instead, this story is choosing to take an Alice in Wonderland approach while applying amnesia-like aspects to really twist things up - truly making Batman a part of the Fortnite experience. His memory can be lightly jogged, such as when he sees Catwoman, even if he doesn't recognize her fully.

This comic allows Batman to experience the world of Fortnite, without forcing him to sacrifice everything that makes him who he is.
