Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman/Catwoman #7

In the latest issue of DC Comics' Batman/Catwoman, Bruce Wayne reveals his dark and gruesome way of adapting when he has no mask. With Catwoman intending to kill the Joker along with the Phantasm, she managed to trick Bruce, taking advantage of their love and trapping him without his costume or gear. As a result, Batman is forced to improvise before facing an entire platoon of Gotham cops, creating a quick solution to mask his identity that's much darker than Spider-Man simply putting a paper bag over his head.

In previous issues of Batman/Catwoman from Tom King and Clay Mann, the relationship between the Bat and the Cat is put to the test in the past, present, and future. The series is set in an alternate timeline based on King's vision for the Gotham couple when he was writing DC's primary Batman series a few years before James Tynion IV took the reins. Due to Selina and Joker having a relationship of their own in the past, it ends up creating a wedge between her and Batman in the present and leaves Selina with a desire to kill the Joker. The future sees Selina finally doing the deed and killing the Clown Prince of Crime (but only after her husband Bruce Wayne had passed away).

Now, Batman/Catwoman #7 sees Selina tricking Bruce, knocking him out and locking him in a bank vault while intentionally tripping the alarm, buying her time so Selina and Phantasm can kill the Joker without interference. Bruce wakes up without any clothes as several Gotham cops are about to burst in to arrest him. This prompts Batman to do the only thing he can to protect his identity as he prepares to fight these officers with his bare hands: he slices open his forehead and covers his face in his own blood.

Batman-Blood-Replacing-Mask

While Batman was clearly short on options, it's still a super dark and hardcore method of masking one's identity. In fact, Clay Mann's original cover for the issue that references this scene was censored by DC Comics for being too bloody. The Dark Knight then took on multiple officers with his bare hands, despite having zero resources in such an enclosed space, all the while looking like a crazed and bloody lunatic. Regardless, it was a very smart move that proves just how capable and adaptable a fighter the Dark Knight truly is. When the chips are down, he's going to find a way to win, even if it's at the cost of his own body.

By the issue's end, Batman managed to disguise himself as one of the cops, allowing him to escape so he could try and stop Selina from killing the Joker. The issue highlights Batman's brutal dedication and determination when it comes to keeping his identity intact and how far he'll go on his crusade for justice. While being put in that situation by Selina in no way helps Batman and Catwoman's relationship in the present, it's still a brutal and intensely entertaining scenario for the Dark Knight all the same.
