Matt Damon trolled Ben Affleck over losing the titular role in The Batman to Robert Pattinson. After he was cast as Batman/Bruce Wayne in 2016's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Affleck planned to direct and star in a Batman solo film he co-wrote with Geoff Johns. Affleck stepped back from directing the project in January 2017 and was eventually replaced with Matt Reeves. The actor ultimately walked away from The Batman entirely, citing personal problems, a lack of passion for the project, and the failures of Justice League as factors in his decision. Robert Pattinson was then given the role, and the film is set to be released in March 2022.

Since departing The Batman, Affleck's personal and professional life seem to be in a better place. Among his upcoming projects is the film The Last Duel that will pair him with his longtime friend Matt Damon with whom he co-wrote the script. The pair made a splash in Hollywood in 1997 with Good Will Hunting, earning them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The Last Duel, which also stars Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, resumed filming earlier this month after being delayed due to the pandemic.

The friendship between Ben Affleck and Matt Damon was on display in a video posted to Affleck's Instagram page. The two have partnered with Omaze for a charity contest to benefit the Eastern Congo Initiative and Water.org. One lucky winner will get the chance to have lunch with the two stars in Los Angeles. In a moment of friendly banter, Damon reminded Affleck that he is no longer Batman after losing the job to Robert Pattinson.

This is not the first time Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have teamed with Omaze to provide a once in a lifetime opportunity. Along with Tom Brady, the actors had a similar offer in 2016 and traded barbs in social media posts advertising the charity contest. This time Damon has even more material given the apparent messy end to Affleck's Batman career. Meanwhile, Damon remains the only actor to portray Jason Bourne.

In defense of Affleck, he didn't exactly lose the job to Robert Pattinson. The actor chose to walk away from The Batman as opposed to being fired or pushed out. And Affleck isn't entirely done with Batman yet, either. It was reported that Affleck is among those actors returning for additional photography to complete Zack Snyder's Justice League. Then he will return to the role once more in The Flash starring Ezra Miller, playing the DCEU's version of the Dark Knight alongside Michael Keaton, reprising his version from Batman and Batman Returns.

DCEU fans will be happy to hear Ben Affleck still refer to himself as Batman even if it is for a staged back-and-forth with Matt Damon. Many still hold out hope that Zack Snyder's Justice League's potential success, as well as The Flash, could convince the 48-year-old actor to continue as Batman. The establishment of the DC Multiverse on film also leaves enough room for Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves to create their own universe with The Batman. Regardless of his future, it's good to see Ben Affleck smiling about Batman again.
