A fan theory posits that Bruce Wayne actually found the League of Shadows first in Batman Begins, and was trying to catch their eye in order to train with them. Christopher Nolan's massively successful Dark Knight trilogy got its start in 2005 with Batman Begins, a film that explored the origins of the character in a fresh and grounded take on the source material. It introduced Christian Bale's Batman and Nolan's take on Gotham City, a city tearing itself apart from the inside due to crime, corruption, and poverty.

Bruce Wayne begins the film on a crusade to learn the necessary skills to combat the issues that plague Gotham, and Batman Begins eventually sees him foiling a plan to use Scarecrow's fear toxin to destroy the city. However, Scarecrow isn't the film's primary antagonist - that distinction goes to Liam Neeson's Ra's al Ghul, the leader of the League of Shadows, a shadowy organization that attempts to recruit Bruce into their ranks. Ra's al Ghul first approaches Bruce Wayne while the billionaire is incarcerated in a Bhutanese prison under the guise of Ducard, an envoy who invites Wayne to join the League of Shadows.

However, one fan theory posted to Reddit suggests that Bruce had been waiting to be approached by the League of Shadows. The theory posits that Bruce had learned all he could through conventional means, and heard of the League of Shadows while working in the criminal underworld. Though it may seem a relatively minor idea, there's interesting evidence to support the theory established within the film itself.

Batman and Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins

In Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, precious little context is offered for how Bruce found himself in the prison, other than he was caught stealing Wayne Enterprises goods while learning how criminals operate. However, the theory believes that having learned all he could possibly learn alone, Bruce sought out the League of Shadows by having himself thrown in a prison as close to their mountain compound as possible. The theory believes this is evidenced by Bruce traveling from the prison to the compound on foot - a detail that an auteur like Nolan wouldn't include unless it was significant.

While that detail may be proof that he was seeking the League of Shadows, it's not the only detail that supports the theory. In Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne is in prison for stealing his own property, hinting that he was incarcerated by choice. There's also seemingly one thug in the prison fight holding back, and the theorist believes this may be a League of Shadows scout sent to witness Wayne's abilities first-hand. These numerous small pieces of evidence combine to form the basis of the theory that Bruce Wayne had all but discovered the League of Shadows, and was incarcerated simply as a means of getting their attention in order to gain access to their training.

Of course, short of Nolan himself confirming the theory, it will likely remain unproven. However, it does fit within Batman Begins' plot and its established characterization of Bruce Wayne, making it particularly hard to refute. Every indication is that Bruce was incarcerated by choice, and the apparent proximity of the Bhutanese prison to the League of Shadows' compound is a detail that shouldn't be overlooked, making this Batman Begins theory all the more plausible.
