Because Gotham Knights will boast robust co-op options, WB Games Montréal redesigned the tried and true combat featured in the Batman: Arkham series; however, fans of the previous Batman titles should still enjoy the gameplay in the Gotham-set adventure. The Montréal crew finally announced their next project last summer following years of rumors, speculation, and leaks. Fortunately, the wait for the game's release doesn't seem as though it will go on for too much longer.

Shortly after announcing the title, the developers made one thing abundantly clear about where their project stands in relation to Rocksteady's Arkhamverse. Gotham Knights isn't an Arkham Knight sequel, despite what a few choice lines from the game's reveal trailer may suggest. The Bat is dead in this new universe, leaving the Bat-family to quell the chaos erupting on the streets of Gotham City. Thus, a fresh narrative has made room for a different approach to combat encounters and gameplay.

Gotham Knights will mark a pretty big departure from the core pillars of gameplay that made Arkham's beat 'em style-combat system so popular. In fact, according to what executive producer Fleur Marty told GamesRadar, the developers "entirely redesigned the combat system in order for it to work well in co-op." Arkham fans need not fret, though, co-op won't infringe upon the fun factor, even those who want to play Gotham Knights solo should get plenty of enjoyment out of the new gameplay. According to Marty, the new project is "still a brawler, and some of the mechanics won't feel totally alien for people who played and enjoyed the Arkham series, but it is in many ways very different."

Later in the interview, the executive producer explained that story progression will be shared across all characters. As such, players won't have to worry whether Red Hood is too under-levelled for a mission if they've spent much of their time playing exclusively as Batgirl. This should also stop co-op friends from arguing over who gets dibs on which character – in terms of progression, no character will be more powerful than another.

Though WB Games Montréal shared plenty of information following the game's announcement, there's still quite a bit that remains under wraps. Chiefly, release date details have yet to go live. However, a recent tease from Gotham Knights' official Twitter page has some fans thinking the street date could be slated for this July.

Regardless of when the title arrives, it's clearly much further along in development than Rocksteady's next project, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The latter was also unveiled last summer during DC FanDome and isn't scheduled to arrive until sometime in 2022.
