Created in 1959, Mr. Freeze is one of the most memorable Batman villains. What started as another joke villain evolved into something more haunting, agonizing, and monstrous: a tragic figure that turned to villainy to save his terminally ill wife but can never be with her because of his mutations.

The infamous Batman & Robin made several questionable decisions by having the character make jokes yet retain the tragic backstory. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger's portrayal of the iconic Batman villain as well as the movie's unique dialogue is what adds to the film's notoriety. While Mr. Freeze's puns did get a little cheesy, there were a few that proved to have a great impact on fans that resonates within them to this day.

Mr. Freeze's Cool Party:

"Alright, Everyone! Chill! Chill! Chill!"

Mr. Freeze shoots his Cold Gun in Batman & Robin

To capture Mr. Freeze, Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (Chris O'Donnell) used the auctioning of their diamond at a costumed gala party as bait. However, they did not count on the enchanting Poison Ivy distracting them from their goal. Just when the dynamic duo started to fight for her, Mr. Freeze crashed the party with his drilling truck and henchmen.

It is common to tell somebody to "chill out" and "calm down," which fits the scene of Mr. Freeze's arrival. That it was repeated ad nauseam while he froze people with his gun pushed it too far and was a prime example of his paradoxical portrayal. Mr. Freeze laughing and gleefully joking what is at odds with his sympathetic backstory from Batman: The Animated Series.

Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy:

"Yes. Adam and Evil!"

Poison Ivy's (Uma Thurman) goal in Batman & Robin was to destroy humanity to pave the way for the return and domination of plant life on Earth. Mr. Freeze's powers aligned perfectly with her plans, and she egged him on to take his revenge beyond Batman and Robin and freeze Gotham City and the world, leaving both of them the last humans on Earth.

This line showed that Mr. Freeze was full of puns even if they were not related to ice and that they can be poorly timed. It undercuts his sadness and grief, turning Mr. Freeze into nothing more than a stereotypical James Bond villain.

Mr. Freeze Causes Destruction:

"What Killed The Dinosaurs? The Ice Age!"

While Batman and Robin played ice hockey with the henchmen over the diamonds, Mr. Freeze tossed a guard in the air to get his freeze gun down from an exhibit. Without looking back to see the guard splat behind him, he made his way back to his drilling truck. Mr. Freeze then froze a dinosaur exhibit to cause a stir and gather his henchmen.

Although it is one of the funniest Batman & Robin quotes, many fans will agree that the pun is nonsensical and was more than a zinger before a special effects scene. All Mr. Freeze did was freeze and destroy a dinosaur exhibit to distract the dynamic duo. Furthermore, the fight was not over as more time was dedicated to the henchmen trying to obtain the diamond.

Mr. Freeze In Prison:

"Allow Me To Break The Ice."

After Batman defeated Mr. Freeze, he was arrested and taken to Arkham Asylum. Stripped of his life-preserving freeze suit, he was placed in a cell with only a sliver of cold temperature for his survival. The guards taunted him and called him "the common cold" before Mr. Freeze correctly introduced himself and tried and failed to escape.

Breaking the ice, or saying something to relieve tension, is a common idiomatic phrase. Like all idioms, though, it does not have to be used in all situations and its usage here is questionable because the tension was not alleviated. Mr. Freeze's casual delivery of it may have implied he was not afraid of his guards, and he may have succeeded in escaping if not for his mutation.

Mr. Freeze Prepares His Plan:

"If Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Cold, Then Put On Your Sunday Finest. It's Time To Feast!"

After a heartwarming scene of Batman asking Robin to trust him as a partner and family, Mr. Freeze arrived at the Gotham Observatory and seized it to enact his deep freeze plan. As Bane, on loan from Poison Ivy, planted bombs, Mr. Freeze prepared all the necessary diamonds and his freeze gun to convert the telescope into a giant freeze ray.

This old proverb was used in many works, such as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, but its usage as a pun in this instance stretches incredulity when combined with treating it as a literal dish to eat. It is a strange line to say after swearing revenge, especially when his only audience was Bane (the tough muscle who possibly did not understand).

Mr. Freeze Arrives:

"The Iceman Cometh!"

The film's campiness that is argued to homage Adam West's TV show was not apparent when the film started, but it was crystal clear at the Gotham Museum. Surrounded by artistic ice sculptures, Mr. Freeze made his grand debut, freezing the museum guards with his freeze gun.

Mr. Freeze's first line and pun of the movie may set the tone for the rest of his appearances, but it does have a deeper meaning. The phrase came from the 1940s play of the same name by Eugene O'Neill that delves into the false hopes and pipe dreams of humanity, with the iceman symbolizing death and loneliness. All of these fit with the general, devastating circumstances of Mr. Freeze.

Mr. Freeze Meets Batman:

"You're Not Sending Me To The Cooler."

After Mr. Freeze broke the diamond out of its display case, Batman crashed through the window and declared who he was. He had a brief skirmish with Mr. Freeze but was knocked back. Just before Mr. Freeze continued the fight, Robin crashed through the door on his motorcycle, somehow making a Bat-logo-shaped hole.

The pun is somewhat on the nose, but it is still a line that calls to mind the days of classic superheroes when the villain declares that they will not be caught and sent to prison. The line also had another meaning when Batman tried and failed to get the freeze gun during the fight, (implying that Batman would use it to freeze Mr. Freeze).

Mr. Freeze's Swears Revenge:

"Their Blood Will Freeze In My Hands!"

When Mr. Freeze escaped Arkham, he asked Poison Ivy to retrieve his wife from his ice cream factory hideout. Ivy complied but did not rescue her and instead pulled the plug on the life support system. She later lied to Mr. Freeze by telling him Batman killed his wife, driving him into a murderous rage.

Mr. Freeze mistakingly thought his wife was dead, so he was outraged. The pun is only noticeable because it was emphasized in Schwarzenegger's delivery, but otherwise, it is no different from any other declaration of revenge. It demonstrated how, when Mr. Freeze's last shred of humanity is destroyed, his morality goes down to absolute zero.

Mr. Freeze's Icy Heart:

"I'm Afraid That My Condition Has Left Me Cold To Your Pleas Of Mercy."

Immediately after Mr. Freeze's first icy line, his henchmen dragged in an unfrozen guard. The guard, on his knees, begged and pleaded for mercy, but Mr. Freeze had none of it and promptly froze him. Mr. Freeze promptly got the diamond but was interrupted by the arrival of Batman.

The pun does not interfere with the line's intent and still gets its message across: Mr. Freeze is single-minded in his efforts to cure his wife, and nothing or nobody will get in his way. He is ruthless towards his underlings' mistakes and those who impede his progress, especially Batman. Unfortunately, one of his best lines is drowned by all the other puns early in the movie.

Mr. Freeze's Wrath:

"Prepare For A Bitter Harvest. Winter Has Come At Last."

Mr Freeze laughing in Batman & Robin

In the film's climax, Mr. Freeze is defeated and informed by Batman of the truth of Poison Ivy's deception. After assurances that his wife was safe, he turned himself in and was placed into the same cell as Ivy. The very last line of Mr. Freeze in the movie was him confronting Ivy, prepared to make her pay.

The line is, pun intended, very chilling, and it was the only time in the movie that Mr. Freeze was terrifying. It also works because it's a pun against Poison Ivy and her theme of plants. Mr. Freeze may have been a complete joke in Batman & Robin, but at least in his final scene, he went out on a high note.
