The Batman's Barry Keoghan teases his role as a Gotham City police officer with a new photo. DC's latest take on the Caped Crusader will see Robert Pattinson in the role of Bruce Wayne during the second year of his tenure as the titular vigilante superhero. In addition to Keoghan and Pattinson, the cast is filled with some of Hollywood's most exciting actors, including Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Zoë Kravitz, and Jeffrey Wright. Little is known about the film's plot beyond what can be gleaned from The Batman's first trailer that premiered at DC FanDome in 2020.

The film will include several iconic characters from the Dark Knight's library of villains. Dano will be playing Riddler, with Farrell taking on the role of Penguin. Catwoman also has a pivotal role in The Batman, with Kravitz playing the live-action version of the character she voiced in The Lego Batman Movie. All of this will serve to underscore the pervasive corruption present in Gotham, something Bruce Wayne's family may or may not have had a part in, if the trailer is any indication.

Anyone who loves Batman knows that the Gotham PD also has a hand in this corruption, and Keoghan will be playing a pivotal role as a police officer in the department. Keoghan took to Twitter to tease his role in the film while still keeping his cards close to the chest. In the picture, the actor can be seen wearing a crew jacket with The Batman's logo emblazoned on the front. Keoghan captioned the post with a few bat emojis.

In The Batman, Keoghan will be playing Stanley Merkel, who appears in the comics as Jim Gordon's partner. It's unclear how close Keoghan's role will hew to the comics, but Merkel spends much of his time on the hunt for Batman. This could put him in opposition to Pattinson's Bruce Wayne throughout the course of the film, but this all remains unconfirmed. With The Batman spinoff centered around Gotham's police department also on the way, Keoghan could play a role in that series, centered around Jim Gordon, but the cast has yet to be announced for the show.

If Keoghan does appear in both, it will be one of the biggest roles yet for the rising star. The actor rose to prominence in 2017 with two films, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Dunkirk. His performances in these films didn't just land him a role in the DC Extended Universe; Keoghan will be making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut later this year in Eternals as Druig. The Batman will arrive a few months later, in March 2022, marking a new chapter in Keoghan's burgeoning career.
