In a shocking turn of events, Leslie Grace's HBO Max original movie Batgirl has been canceled by Warner Brothers mid-production, trashing the studio's prior work on the film. Amidst outrage from the film's cast and crew, as well as DCEU fans everywhere, fans are left to wonder whether or not Grace will have a future in the franchise.

While Warner Brothers and the executives working at DC seem intent on making sure that Batgirl is never seen by the general public, those behind the film's cancellation seem warm to the idea of inviting Grace to appear as the eponymous superhero in future DCEU projects. In the wake of the sudden shakeup, fans have begun to wonder where exactly Grace's Batgirl can appear outside of her own trashed solo film.

The Flash

The Flash Movie Barry Allen

Despite countless production delays and recent controversy regarding the film's lead, the upcoming DCEU film The Flash is still slated for release in the summer of 2023. The multiversal film promises to introduce plenty of new heroes to the DCEU, as well as reintroduce multiple characters from prior franchises.

One of the film's biggest cameos comes in the form of Michael Keaton's Batman from the Tim Burton Batman duology. Keaton's version of the superhero is the very same that had been slated to appear in the canceled Batgirl film. If Ezra Miller's Flash spends any substantial time exploring the universe of Keaton's Batman, a cameo appearance from Leslie Grace seems incredibly likely.

Blue Beetle

DC fans are extremely excited about the upcoming film promising to introduce the somewhat obscure comic character Blue Beetle to the cinematic universe. The film, which is slated for release in the summer of 2023 will see Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña take on the role of the Blue Beetle, becoming the DC Extended Universe's newest hero.

Though some fans have worried that Blue Beetle could find itself on the scrap heap following the recent shakeups at Warner Brothers Studios, the film likely remains safe given its plans for a theatrical release. Because of the tremendous goodwill on the part of DC fans regarding this project, it could serve as the perfect place to feature the debut of Leslie Grace's Batgirl. Additionally, given the film's release date, it wouldn't be too late to add an additional scene starring Grace that may not have appeared in the initial script. Fans would no doubt be interested to see even a short stinger promising a team-up between the two burgeoning superheroes.

Peacemaker Season 2

Peacemaker and Vigilante standing back to back

James Gunn's HBO Max exclusive series Peacemaker starring John Cena quickly proved itself to be one of the funniest TV shows of 2022. Thanks to Gunn's zany sensibilities and irreverent hero, Peacemaker has become one of the most successful projects set within the DC Extended Universe, perhaps rewriting the state of the franchise's future.

In its first season, Peacemaker established itself as a catch-all of sorts for characters from all corners of DC history. Any and all characters are fair game to appear within the streaming series, which seems intent on expanding the DCEU in new and bizarre ways. Given its reputation for introducing new characters to the franchise, Peacemaker could quickly become the new home of Leslie Grace's Batgirl, whose connection to Batman would undoubtedly serve as a fun gag between herself and Cena's irreverent antihero.

Black Canary

Despite Batgirl's cancelation, the upcoming Black Canary spinoff starring Jurnee Smollett seems to currently be safe. Thanks to goodwill following the character's appearance in Birds of Prey, it would appear that she will continue to make appearances throughout the DCEU following her spinoff film, which is set for an HBO Max exclusive release.

Set photos prior to Batgirl's cancelation caused many fans to theorize that Smollett's superhero would appear in the film, perhaps as a lead-in to her own spinoff. Now that such an argument has become completely moot, certain elements of Batgirl and Black Canary's potential team-up could be reworked into the latter's own film. Such a possibility would also give Grace a chance to prove her merits as the character, perhaps going a long way in building up the potential for a Batgirl spinoff film yet.

Gotham City Sirens

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad

Margot Robbie is perhaps best known for propitiating one of the best portrayals of Harley Quinn ever committed to screen. Beginning with 2016's widely panned Suicide Squad, Robbie was one of the few characters to escape the film unscathed, appearing in a number of follow-up projects, including James Gunn's 2021 sequel to her debut film, The Suicide Squad. Despite the character's popularity, her future in the DCEU remains unclear, with no official projects in the works featuring Robbie's Quinn. However, rumors have been circulating regarding a potential Gotham City Sirens film currently in the works, which could very well feature Harley Quinn alongside several other female antiheroes.

Though classic versions of the team have often included Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman, Batgirl would also manage to fit quite perfectly into a Gotham City Sirens film. While Grace's superhero likely wouldn't willingly associate with characters like Quinn, Ivy, or Selina Kyle, she would certainly position herself against such a team-up taking place in her own city. Batgirl could even find herself as the direct opposition to Quinn's new headliner team, acting as a perfect foil to the antihero group.

Supergirl

DCEU Supergirl Sasha Calle

Fresh off the final episode of the Arrowverse's own Supergirl series starring Melissa Benoist, Sasha Calle has been announced as the definitive version of the superhero in the DC Extended Universe. Set to make her first appearance in The Flash, Calle is expected to also receive her very own spinoff film in the next several years.

Though the DCEU's Supergirl project may also be in danger of cancelation following recent shakeups at Warner Brothers Studios, the film currently remains in production. If the studio does indeed intend on releasing the project, the film could easily be reworked as a Supergirl-Batgirl team-up adventure, thereby gaining an extra sense of notoriety that would comfort studio executives worried about another flopped DC film.

Rebooted Batgirl Project

Batgirl Movie Concept Art

Despite the cancelation of HBO Max's Batgirl project, nothing else involving Leslie Grace's version of the character has been taken off the table. If the reports are to be believed that Warner Brothers' decision to cancel the film truly stems from its poor quality, the chances of a second attempt at a solo film featuring the character could still be in the cards for the DCEU.

Judging from fans' reactions to Batgirl's cancelation, a reworked version of the original film with a different script could prove to be rather popular among general audiences. Such a project would go a long way to mend the broken fences between Warner Brothers and DCEU fans, as well as finally giving Leslie Grace her due as the new Caped Crusader.
