Loki composer Natalie Holt will score the upcoming Batgirl movie. In the DC Comics lore, Betty Kane originally held the title of Batgirl until she was replaced by Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City Police Department Commissioner Jim Gordon, in 1961. Barbara subsequently made her first live-action appearance in Adam West's Batman TV series, where she was played by Yvonne Craig. Later, the character also popped up in some other projects, such as Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin feature film, although those appearances weren't as popular. Now, after all these years, Barbara is finally getting the chance to shine under the spotlight completely by herself, as a solo Batgirl movie is in active development.

Work on a Batgirl movie has been underway for quite some time now. Originally, Joss Whedon was attached to direct, produce and write the film, but he exited the project in 2018 citing issues with defining his take on the story. After Whedon left, DC Films and Warner Bros. tapped Bad Boys for Life duo, Adil El Arbi, and Bilall Fallah, to helm the film. At the same time, Birds of Prey and The Flash writer Christina Hodson was brought on to pen the screenplay. Recently, the film also took a big step forward when it finalized In The Heights actress Leslie Grace to play the title role. Since Grace's casting, development on Batgirl has decidedly ramped up, and now the film has landed another key crew member.

It has now been confirmed that Loki composer Natalie Holt will score HBO Max's Batgirl, announced by Holt herself. The musician said in a playful tweet that she was "allowed to say now," followed by a telling bat emoji, and "girl." The post suggests that Holt has been attached to the project for a while, but is only now able to openly discuss her role on the film. Take a look at Holt's tweet below.

Holt's revelation seems to indicate that pre-production on Batgirl may have already begun. This isn't all that surprising, considering that the directors have been teasing their work on the movie for quite some time. What's more, filming on the project is also scheduled to commence in London in November. While Batgirl clearly seems to be making considerable headway, details about the film are still limited to the public. Some speculations suggest the DC villain Firefly will make an appearance, while others hint toward J. K. Simmons reprising his role as Jim Gordon. However, none of the reports have been confirmed so far. What is known for sure is that Batman isn't in the movie, although appearances from Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad characters haven't been ruled out.

The new development surely increases the anticipation for the upcoming HBO Max movie. Holt's Loki soundtrack was one of the best things about the series, particularly as it reminded audiences of iconic sci-fi TV show themes from the 1950s and 60s. Obviously, the music for Batgirl will require a completely different approach, as the British composer will need to take into account the ominous and dark mood of the settings, as well as the fervor of a feisty, modern heroine. Fans can, however, still count on being entertained by the new Batgirl score. Holt is at the top in her profession, with a background at the Royal Academy of Music, as well as plenty of beautiful pieces, to prove it.
