Batgirl actor Brendan Fraser provides BTS details about the unreleased DC movie. Fraser, who has been the subject of recent hype due to his turn in Darren Aronofsky's The Whale, was set to star in Batgirl as the villain, Firefly. The film would have served as the first major DC movie to feature that particular Batman villain. Unfortunately, anticipation for the film was cut short when Warner Bros. Discovery axed it while it was already in post-production. The studio chose not to release Batgirl as a tax write-down, stressing that the decision had nothing to do with the talented cast and crew.

Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who previously worked on Ms. Marvel, Batgirl would have starred Leslie Grace as its titular heroine. Since it was locked away, several details about the canceled movie have surfaced, including a brief behind-the-scenes clip of Batgirl and Firefly in a fight scene, released by Grace. The film's stars have not been quiet about their frustrations regarding the cancelation, and Fraser is among the many who previously expressed their disappointment.

Now, more details have emerged about Batgirl's production. While speaking with Variety, Fraser offers some production details about Batgirl. The actor praises Grace's performance and reveals the movie was "the antithesis of doing a straightforward digital all green screen thing," citing the inclusion of real-life elements like flamethrowers. Check out what Fraser has to say below:

It’s tragic. It doesn’t engender trust among filmmakers and the studio. Leslie Grace was fantastic. She’s a dynamo, just a spot-on performer. Everything that we shot was real and exciting and just the antithesis of doing a straightforward digital all green screen thing. They ran firetrucks around downtown Glasgow at 3 in the morning and they had flamethrowers. It was a big-budget movie, but one that was just stripped down to the essentials.

Could Leslie Grace's Batgirl Ever Appear On-Screen?

Fraser's comments reveal Batgirl would have set itself apart from some recent Marvel Cinematic Universe fare by opting against using excessive CGI (at least in Fraser's scenes), a choice that likely would have won over many superhero genre fans tired of green-screen acting. Warner Bros. Discovery's decision to write the $90 million Batgirl film off for tax purposes is not irreversible, so it's possible that Batgirl could eventually see the light of day. The movie could also be leaked to the Internet at some point, given the many sneak peeks of footage that have found their way online since its cancelation.

Grace's Batgirl could also show up in a future DC Extended Universe movie. Though it's unfortunate that Grace's solo-Batgirl movie has been shelved, fans of the character may have plenty of chances to see her suit up in one of many upcoming DC projects. Batgirl was originally set to take place after the events of The Flash, so projects set to release after that film offer an opportunity for Warner Bros. Discovery to use Batgirl if she fits into the narrative. HBO Max's upcoming Black Canary movie, which hasn't started production, could be the perfect place to introduce Grace's Batgirl into the DCEU.
