Batgirl star Leslie Grace teases new story details for the upcoming DC Extended Universe movie. Like Disney/Marvel Studios before them, Warner Bros./DC Films has been extending its cinematic universe to the small screen. For example, The Suicide Squad spinoff series Peacemaker made its debut on HBO Max earlier this year. While a handful of other DC shows are in the works, one particular feature-length will also make its way to the streaming service with Batgirl.

With a script by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey), Adil El Arbi, and Bilall Fallah, Batgirl will introduce Grace’s Barbara Gordon, who moonlights as the titular Caped Crusader. The film will also star J.K. Simmons as Justice League’s Commissioner Gordon, Jacob Scipio as mob boss Anthony Bressi, and Michael Keaton, reprising his role as Tim Burton’s Bruce Wayne/Batman following work on The Flash. Brendan Fraser will play the serial arsonist known as Firefly, who will presumably serve as the film’s main antagonist. Filming on Batgirl was completed a couple of weeks ago in Glasgow, Scotland and most plot details are being kept under wraps. However, that isn’t keeping Grace from teasing fans with the film’s story.

In a recent interview with E! News, Grace spoke on her character’s upcoming journey in Batgirl. Without revealing much, Grace teased what fans can expect from her iteration of Barbara Gordon, AKA "Babs," in a film she describes as “kind of like an investigate story.” Read the full quote below:

“I will say one of my favorite things about our script and the heart of our movie is that you get to see Babs and this alter-ego that she summons up, Batgirl, vacillate between the nuances of life and good and bad and black and white, and that there so much in between. At the end of the day, in Gotham, so there's always a case, right? It's kind of like an investigative story, it's a detective story, so she does have a case that drives her into these crazy situations.”

“There's not a lot of nuances in her thinking at the beginning of the story and she gets herself into a lot of these sticky situations and has to discover a lot about parts of herself in order to get herself out of them. So, you'll get to see her grow from that kind of perspective of the world and I really, really love that. It's like all your favorite superheroes, you get to see their origin story. You get to see them mature.”

It’s hard not to read Grace’s comments and not immediately think about Robert Pattinson’s character in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which introduced audiences to a young Bruce Wayne as he honed his detective skills hunting the Riddler (Paul Dano). Much like the dichotomy of Bruce Wayne/Batman, Batgirl may explore Barbara's relationship with her alter-ego and, perhaps, the temptation to live the entirety of one’s life as a vigilante. While the character of Batgirl has been portrayed several times on the small screen, as well as by Alicia Silverstone in Batman & Robin (1997), HBO Max’s Batgirl marks the first-ever live-action movie centered on the character.

Grace’s performance and Batgirl's depiction of its hero will likely have an indelible impact on the DCEU. The film presents a unique opportunity to delve into a character audiences have not seen much of on film. With Pattinson existing in another universe, Ben Affleck poised to hang up his cape, and Keaton on the verge of retirement, Grace’s Batgirl could be the DCEU's go-to Bat-person. While Batgirl is currently scheduled to release on HBO Max later this year, Babs' debut could be delayed following The Flash’s release date being pushed to 2023.
