Composer Natalie Holt shares an image from the set of the DC Extended Universe's Batgirl, revealing a first look at a Gotham City Police Department uniform. A solo movie following Barbara Gordon's, the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon, iteration of Batgirl has been in the works for quite some time with multiple creatives attached, including Joss Whedon, who left the project in 2016. Now, Leslie Grace (In the Heights) is set to star in directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah's (Bad Boys for LifeBatgirl with a script by Birds of Prey and The Flash writer, Christina Hodson.

In addition to Grace, Batgirl will see J.K. Simmons reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon from both Whedon’s and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Brendan Fraser, who also stars as Cliff Steele in DC’s Doom Patrol, is set to appear as the film’s villain, Firefly. Batgirl will skip theaters and join Doom Patrol on HBO Max as part of a new strategy from Warner Bros. and DC films—which will also involve a film focusing on Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary and the Michael B. Jordan-produced Val Zod series. Filming for the project is well underway and, while no official release date has been given, it’s expected to drop sometime next year.

Batgirl’s composer, Natalie Holt, recently shared an image from the set of the film on Twitter. The post features what appears to be a GCPD uniform. Check it out below:

Holt has composed music for films including Kindred (2020), Herself (2020), and Infidel (2020). Most recently, Holt composed the Blade Runner-esque score for Marvel Studios’ Loki on Disney+, which more than bodes well for her pending success in the DCEU. DC films revolving around Gotham have set a precedent for iconic scores - most notably, The Dark Knight Trilogy's primal music composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer. Also, Michael Giacchino's score for Matt Reeves' The Batman is already making waves online. That being said, Batgirl will not take place in the latter’s Gotham. Instead, Barbara’s city will presumably exist in the same universe as Ben Affleck’s caped crusader.

Batgirl is poised to highlight Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League's Gotham through the eyes of its hero, who's been confirmed to be a GCPD cop. As the daughter of Jim Gordon, Barbara will have a unique perspective on Gotham—her decision to become a vigilante being influenced by the police force's ineffectiveness. A spinoff series centered on The Batman’s GCPD is also coming to HBO Max. That juxtaposition between Batgirl’s GCPD and The Batman’s should interesting. Regardless, Batgirl is the first Bat-centric film to spawn from what remains of the SnyderVerse, marking the DCEU’s only female-led superhero movie besides Wonder Woman, and anticipation is mounting.
