'The Bastard Executioner' Featurette Offers Plot & Character Details

When it comes to established showrunners creating new series, it’s not uncommon to see them take a few years off between shows in order to collect themselves - before diving back into another multi-year commitment. However, down time is clearly not something Kurt Sutter believes in because, with less than a year passed since the series finale of Sons of Anarchy, the acclaimed writer is all set to debut his next show, The Bastard Executioner.

Bastard Executioner debuts in less than a month (at the time of writing this), and FX has now released an all new featurette (seen above) that details some of the show’s finer plot elements, while showcasing some fresh footage at the same time. So far, based on what we see, there’s reason to be excited about Sutter's new FX program.

Featuring an ensemble cast including Darren Evans, Ethan Griffiths, Lee Jones and Katey Sagal, the synopsis of The Bastard Executioner is as follows:

Bastard Executioner tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward The Thirds charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again, he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.

FX preview for The Bastard Executioner

With this featurette, we’re finally getting our first extensive look at the world of Bastard Executioner - and while it doesn’t appear to have the epic scope of Game of Thrones, that’s okay because unlike that series, this show's Medieval setting is not based in the fantasy genre. This is a more straight-forward period piece, and that means that there’s no mandatory requirement for Sutter to expand the geography of this world (at first), as long as he makes good on this new teaser’s promise of “multi-layered characters.”

There’s currently a lot to be excited about with Bastard Executioner, and it starts with Sutter’s demonstrated ability to develop great characters from the very beginning of whatever project he works on. When Sons of Anarchy first started, audiences were so drawn to it out of the gate because its outlaw world felt fully realized from the first frame. Ultimately, that’s what we need to see from The Bastard Executioner as well in its first episode: a world that’s fully realized and ready to kick things off from a narrative perspective in a major way.

The Bastard Executioner premieres Tuesday, September 15th, 2015 at 10/9c on FX.
